30 Worst Drake Sports Fanboy Moments

Non-threatening Canadian rapper Drake is arguably the most highly visible and enthusiastic sports fan in the world right now. Drake has become such a courtside fixture at basketball games in recent years that when he misses a game, he probably gets dozens of texts from people concerned about his well-being. 

Unlike other celebrity sports fans such as Jack Nicholson and Spike Lee, who limit themselves and their fandom to passionately supporting one team, in recent years Drake has become such a spectacle in the sports world because he doesn't feel encumbered by things like loyalty or tradition.

Drake is the quintessential bandwagon fan, not to mention an unabashed fanboy. He’s been a loyal fan of the Heat…since they signed LeBron James. He’s been a dedicated Kentucky basketball fan…since they started winning national championships. He’s been a passionate Raptors fan since late 2013. 

Perhaps because he is one himself, what Drake really values is superstars. He never misses an All-Star game or an opportunity to schmooze, no matter how awkward or inappropriate it may be. And because the only thing he seems to value is his celebrity status, we (the public) never miss an opportunity to troll him.

Since the Raptors epic mascot was out most of the season with an injury, they got Drake to fill in. His bandwagon fandom was apparently important enough to the city of Toronto that he got his own game-day press conferences. 

Headlines

Event: Raptors vs. Nets

Date: Jan. 13, 2014

Drake was called upon to announce the Raptors starting lineup prior to a game against the Nets in January. Though when the video starts, it looks more like a religious experience than a guest announcer gig.

For some unknown reason, former Kentucky forward DeMarcus Cousins conducted his entire post game interview with a giggling Drake cozily tucked away under his arm. I don't think I've ever seen Drake happier.

This one isn't particularly fanboy, but Drake is making a stupid face here, and surely some people have to appreciate that as much as I did. That shirt probably has a Heat logo on the back, and the one underneath has a Spurs logo on it—just in case.

While watching this game, I came to the conclusion that Drake must be allowed to do whatever the hell he wants in Canada. He was basically the hilariously useless sixth man for the Raptors in the critical final minutes of their Game 7 loss.

Considering this guy is the herpes of sports fans, embracing him was probably their only option. Here's Drake in the locker room after a game—he addresses the team before their coach does. 

It seems like just a few he was sporting a VCU sweatshirt after they made it to the Final Four. Oh wait, it was. Awkward.

As Kentucky's preeminent bandwagon celebrity superfan, Drake took their championship loss to UConn pretty hard. That was probably because the interwebs spent the next 24 hours trolling him. It wasn't all tears though—Drake decided to hang in the UConn locker room after the game instead. 

Dreams Money Can Buy

Event: Seahawks Practice

Aside from his ongoing bromance with Johnny Manziel, Drake has never really been much of a football guy. Well, that is until the Seahawks showed the signs of being a Super Bowl contender in late 2013, which is exactly when they became Drake's favorite football team.

You gotta give him one thing—this guy knows when to jump on a bandwagon.

Recently Drake released a new song called “Draft Day,” which begins with the line: “Draft day, Johnny Manziel. Five years later how am I the man still.” Supposedly the rest of the song is about himself, but the whole thing feels like a loving tribute to Johnny Football. This “friendship” is starting to get a little Single White Female.
