Weird International Sports Commercials

    Now, I don't admit to being a marketing genius or anything, but I'd like to think I know a thing or two about what appeals to people.

    And while company execs spend years and get paid big money to put together a marketing campaign or commercial for a product, they don't always knock it out of the park.

    With a few weird sports commercials already out there in the States, I figured I'd show you a few from around the globe that are equally as bizarre.

Sport

    If you thought that drinking Gatorade would re-hydrate and give you more endurance, maybe it's time to try Sport—made by beer-maker Carlsberg.

    Considering the stuff turns this innocent squirrel into the animal version of Cristiano Ronaldo, I'd say that it's just about the best athletic drink a person could chug—even if it would be bizarre seeing a squirrel juggle a nut.

Mattel

    I'm not really sure if this technically counts as an international commercial—after all, it is in English and doesn't really say what country it aired in—but Wayne Gretzky is wearing an Edmonton Oilers sweater, so I'm claiming it to be from Canada.

    Regardless of where it was filmed or marketed, though, it's weird. A kid literally goes head-to-head with The Great One and, well, the whole thing kind of makes me uncomfortable.

Kirin

    I have absolutely no idea what Ben Stiller has to do with sports, but apparently Japanese drink company Kirin thought highly enough of him to put the dude in a commercial a few years ago.

    While the casting of Stiller is questionable in itself, what's more perplexing is the soda choosing American football as the sport to be represented—I mean, aren't there way more popular sports in that country?

    It's almost as if Kirin wanted to re-enact a Derek Zoolander skit in this ad.

Nike

    While that last commercial might have been bad, this Nike soccer commercial is straight strange.

    Using big-named footballers like Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry is a good thing when they get to actually show their personalities.

    But kicking around an exploding soccer ball that oozes green slime isn't exactly what they do on a regular basis—or so, I would think.

Sprite

    What's the best way to sell soda?

    Well, Sprite figured it was to get the then most popular basketball player on the planet and team him up with one of the country's most recognized entertainers.

    The entire thing's kind of weird anyway, but would someone like to remind me when playing basketball with a skateboard was legal, again?

Fox Sports Espanol

    No fan ever wants to miss a part of the action, so what did Fox Sports Espanol do? They showed that, no matter where a dude is, they're watching sports.

    With no words spoken by anyone except for the commentators and the ad ending with a guy seen on the toilet with his pants around his ankles, this one has to fall under the random category.

Turkish Airlines

    Hoping to bank on the worldwide popularity of star athletes Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi, Turkish Airlines put together this ad—which pales in comparison to the Selfie Shootout the two filmed.

    With Messi and Kobe competing for a kid's attention, the two battle each other by building mini playing card sculptures and making balloon animals.

    Yeah, this actually happened—and I'm still trying to figure out why.

    I'm still trying to decide if this one is, in fact, funny or not?

    While I totally understand that fans are so close to the soccer action that they feel a part of the game, it's just stupid.

    Maybe I'm just Bend depressing, but isn't anyone else bored with this?

Nike

    After getting this commercial sent to me from my old college roommate, my first reaction to it was, "Amazing."

    But after watching it a few more times, it actually came across a little bit weird.

    It's as if Nike just decided to put together all the ideas they had into one piece, with a few A-list celebs and athletes making appearances and U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard turning into The Incredible Hulk.

    I still think it's dope, but with so much going on, it's a little strange.

SKY PerfecTV

    There have been some weird and poorly thought out commercials—and then there's this.

    In most cases, I'd sit around and offer an explanation of what's going on, but I'm seriously so confused by everything that SKY PerfecTV has going on here that it's not even worth taking a crack at.

Atari

    Just when you thought that video games couldn't get any more realistic, Atari proves us all wrong by showing that virtual sports are about as close as it gets to playing a sport yourself.

    And if you don't believe me, then let athletes like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Pele and Mario Andretti show you how much fun sitting around and moving a joystick really is.

Hitachi

    Just absolutely horrendous.

    When thinking about an air conditioner, who in their right mind imagines wrestling great Hulk Hogan singing some ridiculous lullaby?

    Even creepier, what exactly is The Hulkster mentally envisioning while looking at that baby? I don't know, and I don't want to know.
