Matthysse vs. Molina: Winner, Recap and Analysis

Brian MaziqueApr 26, 2014

Lucas "The Machine" Matthysse (35-3, 33 KO) won an epic war over John Molina (27-4) on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Matthysse scored an exciting 11th-round KO to get back on track after suffering a loss to Danny Garcia in September 2013.

This one was far from easy.

Both fighters were dropped in the fight. Matthysse went down in the second and fifth rounds.

Before going down for the final time in the 11th, Molina had been floored in the eighth and 10th frames.

Both men were a bloody mess in this bout. It was a dream for fans of slugfests in the sport.

YouTube personality King J called it the fight of the year so far:

Golden Boy Promotions and ESPN's Dan Rafael also lauded the savage brilliance of the bout:

Early in the bout, Molina's power seemed to catch Matthysse off guard. Before The Machine went down, he appeared to be hurt in the first round.

Molina was clearly unfazed by Matthysse's reputation as a devastating puncher.

To Matthysse's credit, he kept his composure after being hurt early. He began to depend on his jab to set up power shots.

Slowly but surely, he took control of the fight.

In defeat, Molina had an excellent showing. He shouldn't have any problems finding an opponent for his next fight.

Matthysse showed resolve and that he can still finish with the best of them. After the bout, per Greg Beacham of The Associated Press, Matthysse talked about his future plans:

After this win, The Machine is back at the forefront of fight fans' minds.

The boxing community will be eagerly awaiting his next scrap. We can only hope it's as good as this one was.
