Breaking Down the Dates for the Tournament

March Madness has officially arrived.

The college basketball season kicks into overdrive as 68 of the best teams in the nation square off in a bracket-style tournament to decide which program walks home with the national championship.

The action kicks off on Tuesday and Wednesday with the first four play-in games and will continue on for the next three weeks, culminating in the championship game on Monday, April 7 in Arlington, Texas.

After the first round is completed, the four winning programs will advance to the round of 64, and the real bracket action can begin. If you love college basketball, you can’t miss the action on Thursday and Friday, as 32 games are scheduled, and each will be nationally televised.

That’s a lot of basketball in 48 hours.

With many of the small-school teams and undeserving programs eliminated in the second round, the round of 32 on Saturday and Sunday will feature many more intriguing matchups as the top seeds begin to run into stiffer competition.

The Sweet 16 kicks off on Thursday, March 27 (South and West Region matchups) and continues through Friday, March 28 (East and Midwest Region matchups). Each region has its own neutral playing site, with Memphis, Tenn. hosting the South, Anaheim, Calif. hosting the West, New York hosting the East and Indianapolis hosting the Midwest.

The heat really picks up as the teams approach the Elite Eight and the Final Four.

On Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, the eight remaining teams will do battle in the regional finals to determine which four programs will advance to Texas and compete for the national championship.

After a few days to rest and prepare, the teams are right back to work on Saturday, April 5 as the fans are treated to both Final Four matchups just 2.5 hours apart. That will make for one wild Saturday.

The tournament finally culminates with the national championship on Monday, April 7, and the best team for 2014 will be crowned and secure its place in history. With so many talented teams in the field, this promises to be a very interesting tournament.
