The BBC reported on Friday that Manchester United playmaker Wayne Rooney was on the verge of putting pen to paper on a long-awaited five-and-a-half-year deal to stay at Manchester United.

Rooney has always been a lightning rod of sorts at United. While his performances on the pitch have ranged from mercurial to brilliant, he's also been the subject of rumoured transfer requests, and the reported £300,000 per week salary is enough to make Scrooge McDuck squirm.

Naturally, the footballing universe is divided, but it seems to be leaning toward scoffing at the insanely high salary.

Wayne Rooney's new contract: £15,600,000 a year. £300,000 a week. £42,850 a day. £1,785 per hour. £30 per minute. 50p per second.

Wayne Rooney isn't worth £300k a week but he's our best player and I'd rather him be playing for us than anyone else. #MUFC

Personally I wanted to see our style of play change in the future but with Wayne ‘cross field pass to the wings’ Rooney, I can’t see it now.
