Americans Abroad Wrap: Julian Green Agrees to Train with USMNT

It was a rather quiet week for Americans playing abroad, save one giant announcement—that Bayern Munich product and German-American Julian Green will be training with the U.S. squad prior to their friendly against the Ukraine in March.

The news was initially reported by German newspaper Bild and confirmed shortly thereafter by ESPN's Jeff Carlisle via Twitter.

But Green will apparently not be filing his one-time international switch (he is currently tied to Germany due to representing their youth squad in a FIFA tournament), he will just be training with the U.S. at this time.

In Eredivisie action, Aron Johannsson scored again, bringing his season total to 22 goals in all competitions. Danny Williams also picked up a goal for Reading in the English Championship.

Fabian Johnson returned to action this week after sitting out the past few weeks with a broken hand, and there are injury updates on Eric Lichaj and Jermaine Jones.

Read about it all in this week's Americans Abroad Wrap.

In England

There were no English Premier League games this weekend, but there was plenty of action in the English Championship.

Danny Williams started for Reading in their match against Queens Park Rangers and picked up the opening goal of the match.

Tim Ream went the distance at left-back in Bolton's 1-1 draw with Millwall. Stuart Holden is still recovering from injury.

Will Packwood played 90 minutes in Birmingham's 2-1 loss to Huddersfield. Jonathan Spector is still out injured for Birmingham. Duane Holmes was not in the squad for Huddersfield.

Brek Shea was not part of the squad for Barnsley's 2-2 draw with Doncaster this week, having tweeted on Friday that he wasn't feeling well.

There was also FA Cup action, but no Americans were involved. Both Tim Howard and Jozy Altidore were not in the squad for their teams' respective matches.

Eric Lichaj is still out injured for another week or two and missed out on Nottingham Forest's FA Cup tie.

Fabian Johnson returned from several weeks out of the lineup and played 90 minutes at right-back for Hoffenheim in their 4-1 win over Stuttgart.

Steve Cherundolo was not part of Hannover's squad in their match against Mainz.

Timmy Chandler will be missing the next several weeks due to a knee injury.

John Anthony Brooks and Hertha Berlin play Wolfsburg later today.

In Bundesliga 2, Bobby Wood came on in the 53rd minute of 1860 Munchen's 2-0 loss to Ingolstadt.  Alfredo Morales played 90 minutes for the winning side.

Elsewhere in Europe

Juan Agudelo and Aron Johannsson went head-to-head in Eredivisie action with Johannsson getting the upper hand by scoring AZ Alkmaar's lone goal in the 1-1 draw.  Agudelo played 74 minutes before being withdrawn and finished the game as the lowest-rated player for Utrecht.

Jermaine Jones has still not played for new club Besiktas as he recovers from injury but tweeted that he is hopeful to be back next week.

Alejandro Bedoya played 90 minutes as Nantes' withdrawn striker in a 0-0 tie with Nice.

Terrence Boyd and Sacha Kljestan play later today.

Mix Diskerud, Josh Gatt and Conor O’Brien are all still on winter break.

South of the Border

In Tijuana's 3-2 loss to Santos, Edgar Castillo started and went the distance, Joe Corona came on in the 60th minute and Herculez Gomez came on in the 64th. Greg Garza didn't make it off the bench, and Paul Arriola was not in the 18 for Tijuana.
