St-Pierre vs. Hendricks Results: Twitter Reacts to the Main Event

Steven RondinaJun 8, 2018

In case you didn't hear, a pretty big controversy erupted regarding the decision in the UFC welterweight title fight between Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks. The majority of MMA fighters, fans, coaches and media alike, scored the fight in favor of Hendricks.

Two of the three judges, however, did not.

Naturally, everyone swarmed to Twitter to air their grievances and words were by no means minced. So what did folks have to say?

First, let's look at some fighters.

"

WOW Really #UFC167

— John Dodson III (@JohnDodsonMMA) November 17, 2013"
"

I agree with @JohnyHendricks he won that fight.

— Cole Miller (@colemillerATT) November 17, 2013"
"

Ha ha I knew this was gonna be a corrupt dec!

— Jamie Varner (@jamievarner) November 17, 2013"
"

W T F.... Worst decision EVER

— Carlos Condit (@CarlosCondit) November 17, 2013"

There were a couple noteworthy coaches that had pointed words as well, with former UFC welterweight champ Pat Miletich and the trainer of the Diaz brothers, Cesar Gracie, blasting the judges.

"

The 20th anniversary of the the UFC is tainted by the worst judging decision in the history of the sport. F'ing clowns.

— Pat Miletich (@patmiletich) November 17, 2013"
"

That was some serious corruption @ufc tonight

— Cesar Gracie (@CesarGracieBJJ) November 17, 2013"

The media was relatively split, though, with some blasting the decision while others disagreed, but regarded a GSP win as feasible.

"

Holy shit! I don't know about that.

— Duane Finley (@DuaneFinleyMMA) November 17, 2013"
"

You're kidding me. RT @MMAdamMartin: OMG that was the wrong scorecard. Robbery of the year because of what was at stake.

— Mookie Alexander (@mookiealexander) November 17, 2013"
"

St Pierre wins a split decision .. I strongly disagree. Bad call

— Kevin Iole (@KevinI) November 17, 2013"
"

Got this 48-47 for Hendricks here. GSP celebrating like he won already. Not sure what he's thinking.

— Jeremy Botter (@jeremybotter) November 17, 2013"
"

How's that? It was a close fight that came down to a close 1st round RT @patmiletich This is the biggest robbery of all time in MMA history!

— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) November 17, 2013"

Some flip-flopped after initially airing grievances over the decision. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20 and the initial decision was unquestionably contentious.

"

I thought Hendricks clearly had 2/4… GSP had 3… 1/5 were close, but I had GSP. #FightToFinish #ufc167

— Joe Lauzon (@JoeLauzon) November 17, 2013"
"

I'm replaying that fight in my head . I judged it on face damage initially . But thinking back , I think GSP won... http://t.co/6Q1nBMgqsW

— Derek Brunson (@DerekBrunsonMMA) November 17, 2013"
"

To me, Hendricks' grave error was taking his foot off the gas in the fifth.

— Steven Marrocco (@MMAjunkieSteven) November 17, 2013"
"

There is NOTHING in the unified rules that uses the term #damage as something that determines a winner/loser in an #mma fight. #ufc167

— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) November 17, 2013"

Either way, this is a fight that should be looked at as something that builds the legacy of both fighters. Hendricks put on a masterful performance against one of the greatest in MMA history. Georges St-Pierre weathered and showed his own strong wrestling and grappling skills.
