It doesn't happen very often, but the New England Patriots are 8-1 ATS in the last nine times they've been lined as dogs on the road. The Patriots are short underdogs for their game against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

The Panthers are hot, covering five straight and boasting a 4-1 ATS career mark against New England.

Point Spread:
The Panthers opened as 1.5-point favorites. The total was 45.5.

Odds Shark Computer Prediction: 29.1-25.0 Panthers

Why the Patriots Can Cover the Spread

New England “only” ranks 12th in the league in offense this season, but showed it can still be explosive when it scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter two weeks ago against Pittsburgh.

The Patriots also rank eighth in rushing, averaging 129 yards per game on the ground. Tight end Rob Gronkowski has two 100-yard receiving efforts in his first three games back from injury.

Why the Panthers Can Cover the Spread

Carolina might be the hottest team in the league right now. The Panthers have won and covered five games in a row, and just upset the 49ers out in San Francisco 10-9, stuffing them to the tune of 150 yards of offense and zero touchdowns.

Carolina ranks 10th in rushing at 128 yards per game and second in both total and rushing defense. According to Team Rankings, the team also leads the league in time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 34 minutes per game.

The Panthers are riding a 5-0 ATS streak and are 4-1 ATS against the Pats.

Smart Pick

The Odds Shark NFL computer is calling for a Panthers victory and cover, and for the game to go OVER its total. However, this looks like a spot to go against the computer. Yes, Carolina is hot, but after a tough victory on the other side of the country, the Panthers might be candidates for a letdown.

Also, New England has been a wonderful Monday night bet over recent seasons, going 9-3 ATS in its last 12 Monday night games. Take the points and the Pats.

  • The Patriots are 9-3 ATS in their past 12 Monday night games.
  • The Patriots are 10-1 SU in the past 11 seasons after a bye week.
  • The Patriots are 8-1 ATS in their past nine games as road underdogs.
