St. Louis Rams Roster 2013: Latest Cuts, Depth Charts and Analysis

1 of 8

The St. Louis Rams can hear time slowly slip away. They are only hours away from finalizing their first round of cuts and reordering their depth chart. On Tuesday, the Rams need to be down to 75 players by 4 p.m. ET. On Saturday, they must be down to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET.

Despite the fact a majority of the roster is already set in stone, head coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead will take a long hard look at the few remaining spots that are up for grabs when the Rams host the Baltimore Ravens

List of 53-Man Roster Cuts

2 of 8

Here is a list of the organizational cuts St. Louis made to get down to 53 players, according to the Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

    • Sammy Brown, DE/LB
    • Phil Lutzenkirchen, TE
    • R.J. Washington, DE
    • Drew Thomas, CB
    • Nick Johnson, WR
    • Rashard Hall, S
    • Mason Brodine, DL
    • Zach Potter, TE
    • Garrett Goebel, DT
    • Andre Martin, CB
    • Cody Davis, S
    • Eric Stevens, FB
    • Darren Woodard, CB
    • Josh Hull, LB
    • Austin Davis, QB
    • Sean Hooey, OL
    • Justin Veltung, WR
    • D.J. Young, OL
    • Emory Blake, WR
    • Ty Nsekhe, OL

With a very young roster, a lot of the cuts the Rams made were to be expected. As far as the unexpected ones go, linebacker Josh Hull was a bit shocking and so was safety Cody Davis.

Hull has been a longtime special teams ace for the team, but his playmaking skills on the field are below average.

For Davis, it was simply a numbers game despite solid preseason performances. He's a prime practice squad candidate if he clears waivers.

Head coach Jeff Fisher is set to take five running backs into the team's Week 1 matchup versus the Arizona Cardinals

Previewing and Analyzing the Practice Squad

Here's what St. Louis' practice squad currently looks like, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Surprisingly, the Rams didn't add a quarterback to their practice squad. However, a move may still be coming. Practice squads continuously change throughout the season.

List of First Round of Cuts

7 of 8

The Rams didn't waste any time when it came to making their first round of cuts. Per their official team website, they announced on Monday that they have released 11 players so far

    • Brett Baer, K/P
    • Demetrius Fields, WR
    • Andrew Helmick, WR
    • Jorgen Hus, LS
    • Tim Jenkins, QB
    • Al Lapuaho, DT
    • Joseph Lebeau, LB
    • Colby Prince, TE
    • Raymond Radway, WR
    • Robert Steeples, CB
    • Graham Pocic, OL

The Rams have made two corresponding roster moves to get them down to the NFL-mandated 75-man roster limit. On Tuesday, they waived linebacker Jabara Williams and placed offensive guard Ryan Lee on injured reserve.

Many felt Williams would make it past the first round of cuts, but the organization has been pleasantly surprised with the progress of linebackers Ray Ray Armstrong, Daren Bates, and Jonathan Stewart.

    Previewing 53-Man Roster Cuts

Here's a look at how the Rams may cut their roster down to 53 players.

    • Kellen Clemens, QB
    • Chase Reynolds, RB
    • Eric Stevens, FB
    • Nick Jonson, WR
    • Emory Blake, WR
    • Zach Potter, TE
    • Philip Lutzenkirchen, TE
    • D.J. Young, LT
    • Tim Barnes, C
    • Brandon Washington, RG
    • Sean Hooey, RT
    • Gerald Rivers, DE
    • Sammy Brown, DE
    • R.J. Washington, DE
    • Garrett Goebel, LDT
    • Jonathan Stewart, LB
    • Daren Bates, LB
    • Drew Thomas, CB
    • Andre Martin, CB
    • Darren Woodard, CB
    • Rashard Hall, S
    • Matt Giordano, S

The backup quarterback job will undoubtedly be decided after St. Louis' fourth preseason game. Many felt Austin Davis would run away with the job, yet that has failed to happen. However, it shouldn't shock anyone if he makes a strong case to be the No. 2 with a strong performance versus the Baltimore Ravens.

Defensive end Gerald Rivers would make a fine addition to any defensive line rotation; however, it's just a numbers game at this point. The Rams are ridiculously deep at defensive tackle and defensive end. Rivers is a prime practice squad candidate.

Without question, the organization was hoping to get more out of safety Matt Giordano. He hasn't been able to show anything because of his health. It appears as if the team will ride the youth wave at safety for the second season in a row.
