The Rock's Status for WrestleMania XXX Not Looking Good

In 2011, The Rock returned to the WWE after a seven-year hiatus due to his career as an actor. He initially was billed as the host of WrestleMania 27, immediately engaging in a war of words with John Cena. In fact, he assisted The Miz in achieving his biggest win of his career, defeating Cena in the main event.

As a result of the interference, a "Once in a Lifetime" match was made for Rock and Cena at WrestleMania 28, giving WWE Creative one year to effectively build it. The match delivered, and the thought was that both would go their separate ways.

However, that was not the case.

Fast-forward to Raw 1000. Rock appears on the monumental episode, booking his own match against whomever the champion is at the Royal Rumble. At the Royal Rumble, the champion ended up being CM Punk, whom the Rock dethroned to become WWE champion again.

John Cena won the 2013 Royal Rumble, which led to a much more rushed (twice in a lifetime?) match between the two. During the match, Rock tore his abdominal and adductor tendons from his pelvis. This was not a good sign for his future in pro wrestling, as he needs to remain healthy for his acting career.

Recently, Rock was interviewed regarding a return to wrestling. He stated:

I’d like to leave it open. But if I’d never wrestle again, I’d be very content with that. Winning or losing never really mattered to me. The whole idea was to put on a great match. Got injured in that match. Still was able to walk out on my own, which I was more happy about. I don’t know. We’ll see.

Does it even matter if the Rock returns for WrestleMania XXX?

There is no doubt that the WWE is going to pull out all the stops for WrestleMania XXX. It will unquestionably have the "we've made it" feel, geared to be the most memorable of them all. Names such as Steve Austin and Bill Goldberg have both been added to the list of possible returnees for the event. While those names may be possible, it seems as if Rock's chances are getting more dim.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via WrestlingInc., Rock is not a top priority for WrestleMania XXX, or any event in 2014. The latest report states:

According to information given to a major licensee this past week, they were told not to produce any merchandise involving The Rock. They were told he could be used as far as a group shot of Superstars goes but not to produce anything specific because he was not going to be featured until 2015.

Granted, I am sure that the WWE would drop everything at the snap of a finger to get the Rock for WrestleMania, but it does not seem as if Rock is as motivated about a WWE return as he has been the past few years. It would appear the wear and tear that his last match had on his body will force him to rescind the return speech given on February 14, 2011. Particularly, the "I give you my word: I'm never, ever going away" part.

We shall see if the Rock appears at WrestleMania XXX or if he decides to sit this one out. Comment (civilly) below.
