Arsenal Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of August 12

0 of 7

Arsenal fans have seen an endless list of transfer rumours this summer, but very little activity from the club.

The Gunners missed out on signing Gonzalo Higuain and are still in the hunt for Luis Suarez, but more rumours pop up each week. One official bit of news from last week is the sale of Gervinho to Roma.

That move leaves Arsenal with a very thin squad, and fans will be hoping at least one or two of these latest rumours ring true.

Here are the latest Arsenal transfer news and rumours.

Arsenal Face Competition from Napoli to Sign Luiz Gustavo

1 of 7

    Updated: Wednesday, August 14

According to the Daily Mail, Napoli is looking to snatch Luiz Gustavo from Arsenal's grasp at the last minute.

The Gunners have been recently linked with a move for the Brazilian defensive midfielder, with the Guardian and reporting a deal may be close.

Arsenal has lost out to Napoli already in this summer window, with the Italian side winning the race to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid.

Arsenal to Consider "Plan B" with Luis Suarez Efforts Unsuccesful

    Updated: Wednesday, August 14

John Cross of the Mirror writes that Arsenal is considering both Swansea star, Michu, and Manchester City forward, Edin Dzeko, as alternatives to Luis Suarez.

With the Uruguayan striker having reportedly told Uruguayan newspaper, El Observador(h/t Daily Mirror) that he's staying at Liverpool, it may just be that this transfer saga is over.

It's highly unlikely that Arsenal can tempt any of these players, or their clubs, to agree with a move, especially considering Michu's importance to Swansea and Edin Dzeko's form during preseason.

Yoann Gourcuff Still a Possibility for Arsenal

    Updated: Wednesday, August 14

According to the Express, Yoann Gourcuff may still be on his way to Arsenal.

Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulus, told L'Equipe(h/t Express) that Gourcuff is willing to accept a paycut to join the London side.

The French playmaker has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, but the 27-year-old could return to his best form under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger. Gourcuff certainly isn't a need for the Gunners, but his creativity and ability to score goals—showcased during his best seasons at Bordeaux—could certainly help the club.

Gunners Interested in PSV Duo

    Updated: Wednesday, August 14

Arsenal's interest in adding young talent to the squad is always high, as the Express reveals(with an original report from Voetbal International) they are interested in PSV youngsters Georginio Wijnaldum and Zakaria Bakkali.

Wijnaldum was a key member for the Netherlands U-21 side during the UEFA European U-21 Championships this summer. Bakkali has caught the eye early this season, scoring a hat-trick in only his second appearance in the Eredivisie.

Both players would be exciting additions to the squad, with Qijnaldum's versatility enabling him to play all positions behind the forward, and Bakkali a player showcasing great potential.

Arsenal Close to Luiz Gustavo

5 of 7

Both the Guardian and report that Arsenal is closing in on the capture of Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

Gustavo increased his stock a little with some solid performances for Brazil in the Confederations Cup earlier this summer. While he may not be the big-name signing that fans have expected, he would be a great addition.

Gustavo would fill an area of need for the Gunners, providing them with a more natural defensive presence in midfield, and possibly allowing a lineup change that would benefit the team moving forward.

Ignasi Miquel Gone on Loan

6 of 7

As revealed by the official Arsenal website on Friday night, Spanish youngster Ignasi Miquel has gone on loan to Leicester City.

This move lends itself to three questions regarding Arsenal's depth in central defense.

Is Arsene Wenger so comfortable with his current trio of options in central defense—Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker—that no other options are needed? Will Bacary Sagna become a regular backup of sorts? Is there a new central defender on the way?

Miquel's loan move is good on a personal level, but it seems strange given Arsenal's lack of defensive options.

Arsenal Reportedly Offer Massive Contract to Luis Suarez

7 of 7

Luis Suarez is the latest big, attacking name that the Gunners have been linked to this summer. According to the Metro, who cite reports from Uruguay, Arsenal is wiling to offer Suarez a huge contract in order to push through a move.

This saga has been the subject of much attention since Arsenal's £40,000,001 bid and the ensuing confusion over whether or not that activates the striker's release clause, allowing him to leave Liverpool

The Uruguayan forward had his best season in England during the 2012/13 season, scoring 30 goals in 44 games despite missing the last few matchups of Premier League season due to suspension.
