The 5 Most Bizarre WWE Storylines of All Time
Even if you're the biggest WWE fan in the world, you have to admit that they've had some fairly odd storylines in the past.
Some ended up on TV partially formed, leaving fans confused.
Others were built to gross-out comedy angles.
Some can be interpreted to have weird, immoral messages about rape culture.
Many have origins shrouded in mystery.
And there were those that just went on forever without making a lick of sense.
What are some of the weirdest? Let's take a look.
Sin Cara vs Sin Cara
1 of 5In 2011, WWE actually had a really cool storyline that you probably don't know about: there was a feud on TV which would have been awesome if properly explained, but it wasn't.
How it played out on TV:
When Sin Cara returned from an injury, it was secretly a different guy under the mask (Hunico from developmental). Hunico wrestled as Sin Cara for a few weeks and turned heel, but the original Sin Cara returned to clear his name. Or something.
They feuded, and eventually evil Sin Cara became Sin Cara Negro so they weren't wrestling each other in identical outfits. Negro challenged the original to a mask vs mask match and lost. That was the end of that.
Here's how it played out if you understood a promo Hunico did in Spanish and/or read a WWE.com article that was published late in the feud:
Hunico used to wrestle as Mistico in Mexico. Sin Cara became famous in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre as...Mistico. They didn't like each other, as a result. So when Hunico saw an opportunity, he became the fake Sin Cara to steal his identity just like his own identity was stolen in Mexico. They had a mask vs mask match in Mexico in front of a hot crowd who knew the backstory and Hunico lost, so he had to carve out a new identity as a result.
The former? Incredibly confusing. The latter? Pretty cool, but Hunico only alluded to the backstory in passing once, and without any real context, so without a lot of Googling, the average fan had no idea what he was talking about.
To most fans, unfortunately, a second Sin Cara just showed up for no apparent reason and, aside from the mask match, most live crowds weren't into it.
Mae Young's Pregnancy
2 of 5Back when he was "Sexual Chocolate" and it seemed like WWE was trying to get him to quit, Mark Henry fell in love with 77-year-old Mae Young. Not long after they hooked up, Mae announced she was pregnant even though she was decades into menopause.
When she went into labor, it looked like she might develop complications, but she turned out OK, and gave birth to a hand.
I'm not sure that there's anything else I can add to that...
Whatever the Hell Happened with Kane and Lita
3 of 5In 2004, Kane decided to beat up Matt Hardy every week. Matt's girlfriend Lita was horrified by this and tried to find a way to stop it. Kane decided to woo Lita by kidnapping her and eventually declared that he'd stop beating up Matt and menacing her under one condition: he would get to spend a night of passion with her.
And she agreed.
Really.
Kane's evil intentions didn't stop there: The monster wanted to breed, so he poked a hole in the condom that Lita insisted on using. Yes, she was pregnant via Kane. Kane was an honorable monster, though, so he wanted to marry Lita. Somehow this led to a Hardy vs Kane match where the winner got to marry Lita...and Kane won.
Within a few months, it seemed like someone realized that dragging this out for the length of a full-term pregnancy wasn't feasible. The way out? Developmental wrestler Gene Snitsky knocked Kane into Lita, who miscarried—and then, all of a sudden, Kane was a babyface defending Lita's honor against Snitsky.
The Kane/Lita alliance lasted for several months—WAY too long—and ended with Lita turning on him to join up with Edge. Edge feuded with Kane for a little while before the storyline was finally put to bed.
To summarize:
- Matt Hardy was such a weakling he couldn't defend his girlfriend from Kane.
- Kane kidnapped Lita.
- Kane raped Lita both by coercing her into the act to prevent his assaults on her and Matt AND sabotaging the condom.
- Kane totally cuckholded Hardy in the process.
- Lita miscarried and then joined forces with her rapist (I get that a miscarriage would be traumatic under any circumstances, but...geez).
- Lita turning on Kane made her a bad person.
Thank God WWE decided to make their programming more family-friendly.
The Backstory of Kane and the Undertaker
4 of 5Over the course of the last 16 years, the following happened in relationship between The Undertaker and his younger brother Kane:
- Kane was revealed to be alive after 'Taker thought he died in the same fire where their parents had perished.
- 'Taker refused to fight Kane.
- Kane threw lightning at stagehands to try to get 'Taker to fight him.
- Kane and 'Taker reunited.
- Kane swerved 'Taker and lit him on fire.
- 'Taker emerged fine and decided to fight Kane.
- 'Taker beat Kane.
- Kane and manager Paul Bearer set the 'Taker parents' graves on fire, then Kane chokeslammed 'Taker into their remains.
- Kane got a DNA test that revealed they were only half brothers because Bearer was Kane's father.
- Kane decided to try to help 'Taker beat Steve Austin for some reason.
- 'Taker admitted to setting the fire that scarred Kane and killed their parents.
- 'Taker was revealed to be a guy named "Mark" who "took his character too seriously" in spite of Kane existing.
- 'Taker unmasked Kane, who ran away to hide his hideousness and got his mask back.
- 'Taker became a biker and teamed with Kane again before they went their separate ways.
- Kane lost his mask to Triple H and revealed his face, which was charred up like, say, a burnt piece of toast as opposed to looking like burnt flesh.
- Kane looked normal the next week because they were ignoring the scorch marks and decided he was actually Dr. Doom.
- Kane buried 'Taker alive.
- 'Taker came back with Bearer.
- Both brothers tried to kill Bearer many times.
I think they're friends now. I apologize if I forgot anything important. It's confusing.
The Life and Times of Al Wilson
5 of 5In late 2002, Torrie Wilson's father Al Wilson started appearing on SmackDown every week. I'm not sure anyone knows why: he wasn't a wrestler or any kind of performer, just a sad-looking older gentleman.
The evil Dawn Marie decided to seduce Al. Again, I'm not sure anyone knows why. Torrie was horrified, especially when she caught them in the shower (while Al was fully clothed), but even more so when the happy couple announced they were getting married.
Torrie would do anything to stop the wedding, so Dawn said she'd leave Al if she got one night with Torrie. Yes, another "I will leave you alone if you have sex with me" angle. Torrie agreed, and an episode of Smackdown was built around showing the video of them hooking up.
Since Dawn was evil, she married Al anyway. The wedding took place on SmackDown and involved both parties stripping to their underwear. Then Dawn sexed Al to death during their honeymoon. Don't worry, Al was still alive in real life.
I wish I knew why this happened.
