Rogers Cup 2013: Daily Scores, Results and Schedule
The top tennis players in the world are in Montreal this week, as the best men and women will be attempting to conquer the Rogers Cup.
Novak Djokovic comes to Canada as the two-time defending and three-time men’s singles champion of the Rogers Cup. He was the No. 1 seed in the tournament and didn’t fail to impress last year. During his run through the bracket, he only dropped one set and defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets in the final.
Petra Kvitova was the No. 5 seed in the women’s singles bracket last year, but that didn’t stop her from performing at a high level. It wasn’t an easy route to the title, as she dropped the opening set to No. 7 Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals, but rebounded nicely to defeat her and then No. 10 Li Na in the final.
Djokovic is again the No. 1 seed for the men, and even though Kvitova won the title a year ago, she enters the Rogers Cup as the No. 6 seed for the women. Will either defend their titles successfully or will new champions emerge in Montreal?
Continue to check back here each day for the updated draw, upcoming schedules, scores and recaps for each of the matches throughout the tournament.
Men's Draw
1 of 11Player to Watch: Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has owned Montreal in recent years. He won his first Rogers Cup back in 2007, and after a few years of failing to make it to the championship match, Djokovic has been on fire as of late. As previously mentioned, he’s won the last two titles at the Rogers Cup and would boost his career resume with a third in a row.
The No. 1 player in the world has two victories on the ATP Tour this year, but both came before May. He fell to Andy Murray in the final at Wimbledon and would definitely like to avenge that loss with a victory this week. He and Murray could meet in the final if all goes according to the draw.
Player to Watch: Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal enters the Rogers Cup as the No. 4 seed in the men’s singles bracket. Nadal is no stranger to the tournament, as he’s won it twice in his career. He defeated Andre Agassi in the final back in 2005 and then took out Nicolas Kiefer in the championship match three years later in 2008.
Nadal has had a very strong season in 2013. He’s won several tournaments throughout the year, most notably the French Open. While he’s known for his dominance on clay, he’s also tough to beat on hard courts as well. Nadal won the BNP Paribas Open earlier in the year, which was played on a hard court.
Women's Draw
2 of 11Player to Watch: Serena Williams
There isn’t a better women’s tennis player in the world than Serena Williams. She’s had a remarkable year and is easily the toughest competitor on the women’s side of the bracket. She’s a two-time Rogers Cup champion, winning the title two years ago and also back in 2001.
Williams has seven WTA Tour tournament victories this season, including the French Open back in June. Williams doesn’t always play her best each time she takes the court, though, and sometimes exits tournaments she could win a bit early. She was ousted from Wimbledon in the fourth round. Keep an eye on her throughout the tournament.
Player to Watch: Sloane Stephens
Sloane Stephens is quickly moving up the charts as one of best women’s tennis players. While she’s still seeking her first Grand Slam victory, she’s come close twice this year. Stephens fell in the semifinals at the Australian Open and then was defeated in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.
The Rogers Cup might not be a Grand Slam tournament, but a win in Canada would do wonders for her confidence. If Stephens can enter the U.S. Open with a notable win under her belt, it could lead to her first major tournament victory. She has what it takes to upset one of the top seeds this week.
Day 8 Recap
3 of 11Rafael Nadal made quick and easy work of Milos Raonic to win the Rogers Cup. Raonic won just two games in each set on his way to defeat, as ATP World Tour points out on Twitter:
".@RafaelNadal wins 25th @ATPWorldTour Masters 1000 trophy with 62 62 win over @milosraonic in @CoupeRogers final.#atp http://t.co/yV4Kxf1HcS
— ATP World Tour (@ATPWorldTour) August 11, 2013"
Nadal jumped out early in this one, and never looked back. He broke his opponent in the third and fifth games in the opening set, and Raonic never mounted a real comeback.
Raonic's play improved during the second set, but Nadal broke him on Raonic's first service opportunity, and he was never a real threat to steal the set.
In all, the match took just an hour and eight minutes.
Meanwhile, this was just the latest impressive performance for Nadal in a great tournament and an amazing hard-court run:
"Rafael Nadal wins his 25th Masters title, rolls over Raonic 62 62. Hasn't lost a match on hardcourts all year. Rises to No. 3. #atp
— Beyond The Baseline (@SI_BTBaseline) August 11, 2013"
The tennis legend is more commonly known for his clay-court magnificence but has owned the hard courts lately, where he is 45-3 on the year and 10-0 on this surface.
With the U.S. Open and the Flushing Meadows hard courts just two weeks away, Nadal is making a statement that he must be considered the favorite.

Recap
Surprise, surprise—Serena Williams has won another tournament.
The top star in the women's game brushed aside Sorana Cirstea with ease on Sunday, winning 6-2, 6-0 and barely breaking a sweat. Beyond the Baseline put into perspective Williams' dominance:
"p>Serena wins Toronto 62 60 over Sorana Cirstea, who had a great week but was no match. Eighth title of 2013, 10-match win streak. #wta— Beyond The Baseline (@SI_BTBaseline) August 11, 2013"
Of course, Williams isn't happy with this tournament win alone, as Beyond the Baseline writes:
"Serena on whether she'll be disappointed if she doesn't win USO. "I'm disappointed I didn't Wimbledon. And Australian Open. I'm insatiable."
— Beyond The Baseline (@SI_BTBaseline) August 11, 2013"
With the US Open two weeks away, this win was a nice tune-up for Williams, who will look to win her second Grand Slam of the season after winning this year's French Open.

Milos Raonic emerged as one of the biggest winners at the Rogers Cup on Saturday. His three-set victory over Vasek Pospisil not only meant he was heading to the finals, but also secured a top-10 world ranking for him at tournament's end.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Canadian, though. He had to mount a strong comeback in the third set after dropping the second set 1-6 to his fellow countryman.
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal put on as great a match as one would suspect in the other Men's semifinal. The Spaniard showed once again that he's in top form by toppling the world No. 1 in the third set in an epic match that needed a tie break to settle who would go to the finals.
Nadal will see if he can beat the hometown favorite in Raonic to add another Rogers Cup title to his mantel.
Women's action featured a small challenge for world No. 1 Serena Williams as Agnieszka Radwanska pushed her to a tie break on the first set before ultimately succumbing to Williams strong forehand despite earning serve in both set.
On the other side of the bracket Sorana Cirstea continued her incredible run through the field, defeating Li Na in straight sets. The Romanian contender stunned Li from the outset by nearly sweeping the first set before Li staged a strong comeback in the second set and forced a tie break.
Cirstea will now attempt to make her improbable run complete with a win over Williams in the women's final.

Recap
History was made on Friday at the Rogers Cup in Montreal when Vasek Pospisil became the first Canadian in 44 years to reach the semifinals at the Canada Masters, according to The Toronto Sun's Brian Daly.
Pospisil's quarterfinal victory came easily, though, as his opponent, Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko was forced to retire after just three games because of bronchitis.
The great day for Canadian tennis didn't stop there, though. Milos Raonic became Canadian No. 2 to advance to the semifinals with a three-set win over Ernests Gulbis. The fiery 22-year-old will take on his fellow countryman in the semifinal, guaranteeing that the host country is represented in the championship match.
Both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal advanced to the semifinal with relative ease. Djokovic defeated Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2 while Nadal proved once again that he's in top form with a straight sets victory over Marinko Matosevic.
In Toronto, women's No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska put on an impressive display in a straight-sets win over fifth-seeded Sara Errani.
The top-ranked Pole recorded five aces and won 57 percent of her return points in the match, surviving a first-set tiebreaker and then breaking the Italian for a third time in the second and final frame to set up a 7-5 win that would give her the match and a berth in Saturday's semifinals.
Sorana Cirstea continued her surprising run through the tournament field with a three-set win over six-seeded Petra Kvitova. The key was taking advantage of some sloppy play from Kvitova who double faulted 10 times on the way to the loss. After upsetting 15 seed Jelena Janovic on Day 4 she has plenty of momentum heading into her semifinal match with Li Na.
Li was once again dominant as she scored a victory over Dominika Cibulkova to get the the semis herself.
On the other side of the bracket Serena Williams was up to her usual powerful ways. She easily dispatched of Magdelena Rybarikova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. She'll take on Radwanksa in the semis.

Recap
Wimbledon champion Andy Murray suffered a stunning loss on Thursday at the Rogers Cup, going down in straight sets to Ernests Gulbis, who had been 0-5 against the Briton coming in. Murray looked anything but his usual self in the defeat, winning only 33 percent of his return points for the match and capitalizing on only one-of-three break-point chances.
Gulbis aced Murray seven times in the 90-minute match, and was equally as impressive on return, breaking the second-seeded star three times and winning 10-of-15 second-serve return points for the match.
Meanwhile, two-time Rogers Cup champion Rafael Nadal proved he's ready for the summer hard-court season on Thursday, beating monster server Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.
The two men went back and forth in the first set, each breaking the other once before settling down for a tiebreaker at 6-6. Each would have their chances to capitalize in the tiebreak, but it was Nadal delivering in the big moments to seize the set with a 8-6 win.
Things came much more easily for Nadal in the second set, as he broke the Pole twice and managed to put 82 percent of his first serves in play. Rafa would go on to close out the set 6-4 to secure a berth in the next round.
Canadian Vasek Pospisil pulled off the biggest upset of the day. He toppled world No. 6 Tomas Berdych in three sets to punch his ticket to the tournament's quarterfinal. Pospisil's big serve was a factor—he served up 20 aces en route to the upset win.
In the women's action in Toronto, third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska made short work of American Sloane Stephens.
The top-ranked Pole took advantage of a poor service day from Stephens, winning 50 percent of her return points en route to a straight-sets win. Radwanska would need a tiebreaker to close her opponent out in the second set, but the outcome was never in doubt as she pulled away late to win the extra session 7-2.

Recap
Reigning Wimbledon champion Andy Murray made a successful return to the tennis court on Wednesday, defeating Marcel Granollers in straight sets.
Murray double faulted four times in the opening set, but was able to break his opponent twice to win the opening frame and take an early lead. In the second set, Murray would manage to put 79 percent of his first serves into the box, eventually landing his only ace of the match.
The second set would require a tiebreaker, but Murray took over when it mattered to win the big points and advance to the next round where he'll take on unseeded Ernests Gulbis.
Like Murray, Rafael Nadal cruised in his return to the ATP Tour. Nadal took on Canadian wild card Jesse Levine in the second round on Wednesday, earning a dominant straight-sets victory, dropping just two games in all.
Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych also had very little trouble advancing early on Wednesday, taking out Alexandr Dolgopolov in what was a routine straight-sets win for the Czech star.
Berdych recorded nine aces and won all three of his break points in the comfortable victory.
Jerzy Janowicz defeated Frank Dancevic in three sets. The No. 15 seed captured 85 percent of first-serve points while notching 18 aces, which made up for his 11 double faults.
And the young Milos Raonic breezed through Mikhail Youzhny in just under 1 hour 14 minutes. Raonic won 89 percent of first-serve points and 75 percent of second-serve points while posting 13 aces to zero double faults.
In the women's singles draw, fourth-seeded Li Na rolled past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, winning in straight sets to secure a berth in the round of 16.
The Russian challenger put 68 percent of her first serves in play during the opening set, but won just one-of-six second-serve points. Li would break her twice in the first set to grab an early lead before going on to win in just over an hour on court.
In other women's action, American Sloane Stephens survived a scare from unseeded German Mona Barthel. Stephens would take the first set 6-3, but drop the second set 4-6 to set up a deciding set.
Stephens wasn't great on serve in the third and final set, allowing Barthel to break her once, but was fantastic in the return game, winning 50 percent of her return points in the set and breaking Barthel twice to take the set and the match.
Stephens will advance to play third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the round of 16.
No. 1 seed Serena Williams rolled through Francesca Schiavone in straight sets. Williams won 68 percent of first-serve points and 74 percent of second-serve return points while capturing five of six break points.
No. 13 seed Kirsten Flipkens defeated Kiki Bertens in three sets. Flipkens won 65 percent of first-serve points and 53 percent of second-serve return points.
Petra Kvitova knocked off Eugenie Bouchard on Wednesday in straight sets. The No. 6 seed won 72 percent of first-serve points and 61 percent of second-serve return points while saving five of six break points. Bouchard had eight double faults in the match.
Sorana Cirstea came back from a set down to shock Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday. Cirstea won 63 percent of first-serve points while winning seven of 11 break points and saving 13 of 20 break points.
Samantha Stosur came back from a set down to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro. The No. 12 seed captured 64 percent of first-serve points and 59 percent of second-serve return points in the clash.

Recap
Spanish contender Nicolas Almagro was upset by veteran Czech player Radek Stepanek, who overcame a tough second-set tiebreak defeat to battle back and win in three sets.
Stepanek would put 70 percent of his first serves in play in the final set, and win both of his break-point chances to put Almagro away in a match that lasted nearly two hours.
In other men's singles action, Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz topped Frenchman Julien Benneteau in a match that also went the distance. The big-serving Janowicz dropped the first set but recovered in the second frame, leveling the match at a set apiece before surviving a dramatic deciding set, 7-5.
Kei Nishikori defeated Andreas Seppi on Tuesday, coming back from a set down to emerge victorious, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Nishikori won 73 percent of first-serve points, as well as 53 percent of second-serve return points. He also saved four of six break points.
No. 10 seed Tommy Haas also defeated David Goffin in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Haas won 84 percent of first-serve points while notching eight aces. Goffin posted three aces while racking up four double faults in the match.
No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic made quick work of Florian Mayer on Tuesday, needed less than 56 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-1 victory. He captured 69 percent of first-serve points, 61 percent of second-serve points and 66 percent of second-serve return points. He also saved all seven break points.
No. 7 seed Richard Gasquet defeated Martin Klizan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. He won 76 percent of first-serve points while saving all seven break points.
Eleventh-seeded female Maria Kirilenko made short work of qualifier Petra Martic, dropping just three games in the simple straight-sets win.
Meanwhile, former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic had an easy time defeating Su-Wei Hsieh, taking advantage of her opponent's mistakes. Hsieh would double fault eight times in the match and manage to win just 40 percent of her service points in a straight-sets defeat that would take under an hour to complete.
In a shocker, Dominika Cibulkova defeated No. 8 seed Angelique Kerber, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. Cibulkova posted 11 double faults in the match, but Kerber posted 10 of her own. Cibulkova also won 61 percent of first-serve points and saved 10 of 14 break points.
No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska wasn't about to be upset, though. She breezed through Yanina Wickmayer on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3. That included winning 73 percent of first-serve points, 66 percent of second-serve points and 63 percent of second-serve return points.

Recap
Ivan Dodig got the first round of action from Canada underway with a straight-sets victory on the men’s side of the bracket. He looked very polished throughout the match, as he only allowed Grega Zemlja to win two games.
Florian Mayer avoided an opening-match loss after dropping the first set against Bernard Tomic. Tomic took the first set, 7-5, but couldn’t win the second or the third to advance to the second round. Mayer played very well despite getting himself into an early hole, but cannot afford to drop the first set again going forward.
Lukas Rosol and Andreas Seppi competed in what turned out to be the most exciting match of the day. Seppi won the first set, but Rosol bounced back nicely to win the second and force a decisive third. The two went back and forth in the third set and a tiebreak was necessary to determine the player headed to the second round.
Seppi barreled down to get in front of Rosol, and he was the one who came out victorious in the match. He’ll face either Kei Nishikori or Peter Polansky in the second round of the tournament.
Pablo Andujar started strong against Amir Weintraub, winning the first set of the match with ease. He played well in the second set as well, but so did Weintraub. Even though the Israeli forced a tiebreak, he failed to take out the Spaniard, as Andujar advanced to the second round with a straight sets victory.
Ernests Gulbis won his match in straight sets too, but his was much closer than Andujar's. Feliciano Lopez put up quite the fight, falling in the first set after a tiebreak, and dropping the second set by just two games. Unfortunately for him, his effort wasn’t enough for him to clinch a berth in the second round.
Flavia Pennetta and Mona Barthel each advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup on the women’s side of the tournament. Both players needed three sets to win their respective matches. In Barthel’s victory, she dropped the first set and went to a tiebreak in the first and third sets. She’s lucky to have made it out of the match alive.
Sorana Cirstea didn't have any issues whatsoever in her first-round matchup against Olga Savchuk. Cristea took down her opponent in straight sets and only lost five games throughout the match. By winning, she secures a spot in the second round in the women's singles bracket.
Dominika Cibulkova took down Jana Cepelova in her first-round match, but it was one of the closer two-set matches of the day. Cibulkova won the first set, 7-5, and then the second as well, 6-4. It won’t get much easier for Cibulkova going forward, as she’ll face No. 8 Angelique Kerber, who had a first-round bye, in the second round.
