Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Should Give Up on Cesc Fabregas

Benjamin KleinAug 1, 2013

The pursuit of Cesc Fabregas by Manchester United has to come to an end.

David Moyes isn’t going to get the elite talent he wants and needs to come to terms with that. Ben Smith of BBC Sport reports that Fabregas remains a priority for the club’s manager even though Barcelona has already rejected a pair of bids from Manchester United to land the midfielder.

Smith writes that Manchester United are currently prepping a third bid for Fabregas—one that would break the club’s transfer record, which was set when the Red Devils signed Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham for £30.75 million. But it doesn’t seem likely that Barcelona will accept the club’s latest attempt either.

“Man United want Cesc?” Gerardo Martino asked at his recent unveiling as Barcelona’s new manager, according to Joe Strange of the Daily Mail. “If the club rejected two offers, I will reject it a third time. Cesc will be here.”

It’s also been reported that the midfielder doesn’t want to leave. Here’s what former Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova told reporters about the player’s intentions, according to Jay Jaffa of Goal.com:

"

I am aware that we have received offers from other teams. I talked with him and he told me he wants to stay.

Cesc doesn’t contemplate the possibility of going to another club. He knows that the competition here is great. His dream is to succeed here. I’m totally calm.

"

Are you convinced that Fabregas isn’t going anywhere yet?

Good. Now can you help Moyes understand?

It makes sense that Moyes wants to have Fabregas playing for Manchester United, but it’s unreasonable to think that Barcelona would actually accept one of the bids. Thiago Alcantara just left the club a few weeks ago, and it wouldn’t make sense for Barcelona to let another star leave.

Barcelona would still have a lot of talent on the roster even if the club accepted one of the Red Devils’ bids, but he isn’t worth losing. The 26-year-old appeared in 32 La Liga matches for his club a year ago and finished with the 18th-most goals (11) and the third-most assists (13).

Only Lionel Messi scored more goals than Fabregas for Barcelona last season. The midfielder has the potential to put the ball in the back of the net more times in the upcoming season. He’s a fantastic passer who makes his teammates significantly better when he’s on the pitch. Barcelona cannot give him away for any bid.

Moyes can keep throwing money Barcelona’s way, but in the back of his mind, he has to know that he won’t be getting his hands on Fabregas. The midfielder doesn’t want to leave, and his club isn’t going to be interested in letting him go no matter what the bid is—whether it breaks a Red Devils record or not.

Moyes gave it a good shot, but needs to put the bidding for Fabregas to rest.
