Ben Foster Will Play Lance Armstrong in Just One of Many Biopic Films Coming
Just because sports fans have seen enough of Lance Armstrong doesn't mean studios will stop from making three biopics based on the shamed cyclist who admitted to longtime use ofย PEDs earlier this year.ย
Deadline Hollywood reports one studio found their own Armstrong in actor Ben Foster, who is most notable for his roles inย Alpha Dogย andย X-Men: The Last Stand:
"Stephen Frears'ย Lance Armstrong movie is further along than I thought. Iโm told thatย Ben Fosterย is already in final talks to play Armstrong in the film, which was scripted byย Trainspottingโsย John Hodgeย and covers Armstrongโs career from his cancer ordeal to the scandal that brought him down.
"
You don't need to worry about Armstrong's life getting erased from popular culture, because it's about to be covered extensively.ย
Before we dive into the other two movies to center on the former cyclist who was stripped of his Tour de France titles, let's discuss the decision to go with Foster, which seems like a good choice.ย
While there has been no confirmation from the actor or his representatives, the report mentions that theย busy schedule for Foster includes theย potential production start-up for the film this fall.ย
Fans might recognize the man who played alongside Jason Statham in 2011's The Mechanic and also starred in 2009's The Messenger. And we of course have to mention his turn as the bloodthirsty Charlie Prince in 3:10 to Yuma.ย
Aside from what you might think about Armstrong, the role seems to be in good handsโat least in this particular version.ย
As previously mentioned, there are two other films based on the 41-year-old who was once heralded as the best in his sport, only to see his prestige and accolades destroyed thanks to admissions of doping.ย
Deadline Hollywoodย has more on a pair of films that will no doubt concentrate as much on Armstrong's failures as his triumphs:
"Warner Bros has been working on an untitled projectย from Atlas Entertainment scripted byย Side Effectswriter Scott Z. Burns to be directed byJay Roach, the helmer of celebrated fact-based filmsย Game Changeย andย Recount. The package includes the life rights of Tyler Hamilton, the Olympic gold medalist, NCAA champion and Armstrong teammate on the US Postal Service Team who was menaced by Armstrong after he took toย 60 Minutesย to break the code of silence.ย
Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot partners JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk areย working on a movie about the disgraced bicycle racer, based on the HarperCollins bookย Cycle Of Lies: The Fall Of Lance Armstrongย by New York Times sportwriter Juliet Macur.
"
Adding to the intrigue, the report rumors Bradley Cooper has been bandied about for the latter film, which would indeed bring some A-list buzz to the role.ย
Of course, all three movies are in the beginning stages of production, and there is a good chance that one or all hit a wall before filming begins.ย
Still, there is a strongย likelihoodย that fans who would rather move on from the Armstrong debacle will have an opportunity to relive the sad tale over again in the form of three Hollywood biopic films.ย
No amount of movie theater popcorn can make that more palatable.ย
