Arizona Diamondbacks Introduce Luchador as New Official Mascot

Rey Mysterio Jr., Ultimo Dragon and Sin Cara (formerly known as Mistico) are all names wrestling fans will recognize. All three rose to fame during the glory days of WCW or WWE as part of Lucha Libre wrestling.

While none of those entertainers will be making an appearance in an MLB stadium, another Lucha Libre practitioner will, as the Arizona Diamondbacks took a break from the norm and introduced a mascot unlike any other in professional sports.

According to a team press release, the Diamondbacks introduced the D-backs Luchador as the official team mascot on Thursday:

The popularity of last year's Lucha Libre mask, which was later followed by a Lucha Libre match, inspired the creation of the Luchador character and this year the mascot features a new look.

The D-backs Luchador is fluent in English and Spanish and resembles an athlete you would find in a Lucha Libre match.

Coolness factor aside, this is a home run by the Diamondbacks, especially for the kids who attend games.

It gets even better for Arizona fans: The Diamondbacks will hand out 20,000 Luchador masks at their home game on July 27.

While there likely won't be a wrestling match every home game, kids will have the opportunity to rub elbows with athletes they only see on TV.

Just like any other mascot in baseball, the Luchador will mingle with the fans, giving kids an opportunity they could only dream of.

It's going to be a very powerful mascot tandem, one that I would put up against any mascot in any sport. Well, with the exception of LSU's Mike the Tiger or Colorado's Ralphie the Buffalo.

Overall, this is a great move for the Diamondbacks and one that will appeal to wrestling fanatics just the same.
