Da'Shawn Hand, 5-star strong-side defensive end, will represent one of the biggest commitments of the 2014 recruiting cycle, especially considering his powerhouse top three of Michigan, Alabama and Florida.
Michigan is arguably the hottest program in recruiting right now, Florida is building a championship contender and Alabama and Nick Saban are on a whole different level completely.
Until somebody can knock the Crimson Tide off, they look to be the favorite to keep rolling right to and through the championship game.
Frankly, Hand could not have picked a better top three, and one can only imagine that it will be a tough decision for the No. 2 player in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Here's what would be each finalist's best sales pitch for Hand. Note: These are satirical in nature.
You've reached Da'Shawn Hand, leave a message at the beep...
"Hey there Da'Shawn, coach Brady Hoke here. I just wanted to call you real quick to talk to you about Michigan. I know you've got a big decision coming up, and I thought I'd help you make it a bit easier.
Just ask Jabrill Peppers (5-star athlete and Michigan commitment), we've got some big things going down up here in Ann Arbor, and we'd love you to be a part of it. Jabrill is the big name right now, but if you came along and committed, you and him could be the catalysts of a new era of Michigan football.
With Jabrill on the edges and you dominating the line of scrimmage, we could become elite. You know just how much easier pass-rushing would be with a ball-hawk, shutdown corner making things miserable for the quarterback.
You'll also have guys like Bryan Mone and Lawrence Marshall on the line with you, so there's a lot to like. That's not even factoring in the rest of the recruits that I've brought in these last few cycles.
Ann Arbor is a great college town, and we think you'll really like it here. We've got big plans for the future, and yes, that includes winning the Big Ten. We're going to beat those Spartans on a yearly basis, and don't even get me started on Ohio.
Not only will we beat Ohio at the end of the year, but we're aiming to win some national championships.
We need you to do that though, so what do ya say? Talk to ya soon."
"Hey Da'Shawn, it's coach Will Muschamp, how are ya? Reaching out real quick to gauge your interest in the Florida Gators. We've got a lot going on down here, and you'd be a perfect fit. I only recruit hard-nosed, tough-minded, physical defenders, and I think you've got what it takes to be a star in our hybrid system. We're going to be aggressive, we're going to be tough, and we're going to physically dominate our opponents.
We'll find ways to use your speed and feature your strengths as a pass-rusher. Wanna stand up and rush? We can make that happen. Feel like rushing from the line? Not a problem, we can do that as well.
I know you've watched plenty of SEC football, so you know it's a tough conference. We believe we can set the tone and be the dominant program again. We need you to do it though.
I've already put together solid group of kids. You'd have the chance to play with guys like Khairi Clark and Anthony Moten. They will draw double-teams and allow you to get those one-on-one matchups you want.
You've got plenty of speed off those edges, and we'll utilize that.
Remember last year's class? It was such a great defensive class, and we'd love to add on to it this cycle. Imagine playing in front of a cornerback like Vernon Hargreaves III. He's going to cause quarterbacks to think twice about throwing the ball, and that will give you that extra second you need to make a sack.
We're going to play championship level football here at The Swamp, and we believe you're the missing piece. You're talented enough to crack the rotation right away and get some major playing time in big spots as a freshman.
Plus, the weather down here is beautiful. You're going to love it in Gainesville.
Get in touch when you can, Da'Shawn."
Hey Da'Shawn? It's coach Nick Saban from Alabama. I was just staring at my four national championship rings and I thought I'd give you a call.
Anyhow, no big deal. Gimme a call back.
