Fans of Barcelona will have their eyes set on constant transfer news this summer regarding defenders. It is no secret that the club must reinforce their back line, but there is no word yet on who will be coming to the Camp Nou.

There have been several names rumored to be on Barcelona’s wish list.

Thiago Silva appears to remain the top target of Tito Vilanova, according to Goal. Daniel Agger has also been in the rumor mill along with other strong candidates, such as Jeremy Mathieu.

Barcelona has been interested in two young talents as well. Marca reported several months ago that the club was willing to battle Real Madrid for Inigo Martinez. The same Spanish paper also reported around the same time that La Blaugrana had eyes set on Roma star Marquinhos.

There is no shortage of transfer targets, but not every player is right for the position. However, a new name has come up in recent weeks that is a bit peculiar.

The Daily Mail has reported that Arsenal is in a fight to retain the services of French centre-back Laurent Koscielny. The Express went as far to say that he is now Barcelona’s top target.

Despite his talents, Koscielny should not be considered a top target by Barcelona.

To begin with, there is an issue of overall ability. There is no doubting the talent of Koscielny. The Frenchman was arguably Arsenal’s top defender last season, and the world has seen his ability showcased in competitions such as the Champions League.

But Koscielny is far from being labeled as one of the best defenders in the world.

With Barcelona having targeted such players as Thiago Silva, Mats Hummels and Vincent Kompany over the last season, Koscielny would be considered a serious drop off. If the club is serious about absolutely fixing their issues in defense, then a true star must be brought in.

The Arsenal defender put up some impressive statistics last season, such as averaging nearly two tackles and two interceptions per game. But Barcelona is looking for someone a bit more special.

There also appears to be the idea of Barcelona wanting to bring in a new defender that can pair up with Gerard Pique for years to come. That would explain the interest in youngsters such as Inigo Martinez.

It is imperative that Barcelona fixes the defensive issues now while also making sure their back line will be covered for seasons to come.

These very reasons are why Barcelona is not pushing hard to sign other rumored targets, such as Daniel Agger or Jeremy Mathieu. Laurent Koscielny is certainly a step above them but only a step.

What it comes down to is that Barcelona is looking for one of two things. The club either wants an established and experienced star or a rising talent that could become one of the best in the game.

Though Laurent Koscielny is a very impressive player with a lot of positive traits, he does not meet either of Barcelona’s requirements. If anything, Koscielny should be considered a strong backup plan for Barcelona, but counting him as one of the top targets just does not make sense.

There is a reason, however, for the numerous rumors linking Koscielny to Barcelona. And that reason all comes down to money.

For Barcelona to get what they want the club will have to pay. Players such as Thiago Silva and Marquinhos will not come cheap. Koscielny does make sense financially, as he would be significantly cheaper than the top names on Barcelona’s radar.

But Cules everywhere are growing worried. Many hope that the club does not make the same mistake as in previous years, where the club waited too long and was forced to settle. If the issue indeed comes down to finances, purchasing Laurent Koscielny would be settling.

Barcelona has numerous top targets already, all of whom could fit into the squad today and make a serious impact on the present and future. Though it would be wise for Koscielny to be considered as a backup plan, putting his name on the top of the list of targets would be a huge mistake by Tito Vilanova.

La Blaugrana has the means of getting the best players on the market. Settling for cheaper options is what got Barcelona into the situation they are in today, but now the club must make best choice possible.
