While there has been a hope for many fans in the WWE Universe that Ryback would unseat WWE champion John Cena at Payback, according to F4WOnline via Wrestling Inc., the company will use the PPV as a way to get Cena back to the top of the card and portrayed as the strongest star in the company once again:
As of this week, Ryback is not scheduled to win the WWE Title from John Cena at Sunday's Payback pay-per-view. The whole idea behind the Three Stages of Hell match is that it will be used as a vehicle to get Cena over big for the summer.
The problem here is that Cena is already the top star in the company. The WWE should be building up new stars, and whether Ryback is the future of the business or just another failed project, the fact that Cena is being booked strong is a microcosm of what’s wrong with the company right now.
After losing at so many previous PPVs, the WWE would have been wise to give Ryback the WWE Championship to validate his presence in the main event scene. After he takes yet another loss, Ryback should be relegated to fighting The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship.
Main Event Preview and Prediction
In the main event of the evening, John Cena will defend his WWE Championship against Ryback in a Three Stages of Hell match. With only three matches of this ilk in the history of the company, the WWE Universe is entering rarefied air here.
This is essentially a 2-out of-3 falls match, with every fall having its own stipulation. With Cena beating The Rock at WrestleMania 29 to get his redemption, the fans should expect Cena to lose one of the falls, but not two and not the title.
A Cena victory looks fairly obvious here, but how the WWE gives the monster heel the loss is imperative to his future success in the company. The first bout is a lumberjack match, and with the ability to pin your opponent cleanly, it should be Ryback that wins the first fall.
Cena can win the table match and somehow get Ryback into the ambulance to retain the title, but as long as Ryback gets a clean pin over Cena, he will always have that to build off of going forward with his career.
While Cena will win, the WWE can still make Ryback look incredibly strong.
Prediction: John Cena retains.
Predicting the Rest of Payback
Dolph Ziggler returns from his concussion to defeat Alberto Del Rio via clean pin to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
CM Punk returns to defeat Chris Jericho cleanly in the best match of the night.
The Shield’s Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns will defeat Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan to retain the WWE Tag Team Championships after Orton turns on Bryan and costs his team the victory.
Curtis Axel—Paul Heyman’s newest client—will defeat Wade Barrett and The Miz to win the Intercontinental Championship and carry on the Hennig legacy.
Dean Ambrose will defeat Kane to retain the United States Championship in an excellent match.
AJ Lee will defeat Kaitlyn for the Divas Championship and form the ultimate power couple, featuring the World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler.
Sheamus will defeat Damien Sandow in a glorified squash match for the kids watching on Yahoo! Sports or YouTube (Payback Match Kickoff).
