Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Breaking Down Gunners' Midfield Target Matthias Ginter

Patrick ClarkeJun 1, 2018

Arsenal have plenty of needs to address this summer in order to challenge the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in the English Premier League next season and become a contender on the European stage.

But the good news is that there is still plenty of time for Arsene Wenger and company to work out a few deals. One of those deals could potentially bring talented teenager Matthias Ginter to Emirates, according to the Mirror's John Cross

"

Arsenal manager Wenger is keen to sign Matthias Ginter, a 19-year-old defensive midfielder, from German top-flight side Freiburg in a deal worth £5m.

A fast-improving player out of Germany who turned 19 back in January, Ginter shows plenty of promise as a versatile player who can defend, possess the ball and get the attack started from the back.

Currently playing for SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga, Ginter has picked up some valuable experience playing against some of Europe's top clubs in Germany. He scored only one goal in 23 league appearances for SC Freiburg this past season, but more importantly, he started in 21 matches.

Ginter emerged as an up-and-coming talent at a young age, showing tons of promise as a youngster in Freiburg's youth academy. It's safe to say that he's developed nicely over the years, growing to be about 6'1" and becoming much more of a physical presence on the pitch.

Ginter already has the speed and strength to hold his own in the Bundesliga. Assuming he can continue to gain invaluable experience as a starter in Europe, the sky is the limit for him in terms of improving his technique and becoming a more polished player.

Starring in a defensive-midfield role, Ginter can be relied on to the win the ball at the back. As mentioned, he's got the size and he's strong enough to challenge top level strikers.

Given the combination of potential and versatility that Ginter brings to the table, Arsenal would be wise to pursue him this summer.

The Gunners ranked among the top two defensive teams in the Premier League last season in goals allowed, conceding just 37 in 38 league matches. But adding a young piece like Matthias Ginter is a great way to help ensure that Arsenal remain stout on that side of the ball for years to come.
