Kaitlyn's Secret Admirer and the Best WWE Diva Romance Storylines Ever

Ryan DilbertJun 8, 2018

The search for Kaitlyn's secret admirer is the latest in a long line of romance-based WWE Diva storylines, the best of which are forever etched into fans' minds.

Kaitlyn's story has barely begun, and it could just as easily be compelling as it could be corny. When it has reached its conclusion, where will it rank among the best?

WWE's most entertaining love stories teemed with emotional power. It's these kinds of angles that lead people to call WWE a soap opera for men. As tawdry as they might be, these stories gave us hatred and love, jealousy and rage that made the action in the ring more meaningful.

The greatest WWE romance story featured one of wrestling's most beloved couples. In the years since Randy Savage and Elizabeth, WWE has been trying to reclaim that same spark through love triangles, weddings and obsessive relationships.

The 10 best are ranked here based on their impact on WWE, their entertainment value and emotional power.

Honorable Mention

1 of 11

Other entertaining WWE love storylines include the uncomfortable-to-watch relationship with Marlena and Goldust. Their sexual tension combined with Goldust's creepiness made their pairing a compelling one, even if they didn't have as many dramatic moments as other couples.

Edge and Vickie Guerrero's on-screen relationship led to some thrilling moments and some career advancement for Edge. Their wedding, following WWE tradition, didn't end well.

The Kane and Tori angle, which ended with X-Pac stealing Kane's woman away from him, deserves a mention as well. Different relationships for Edge and Kane, though, made the list on the strength of pulsating drama.

10. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix

2 of 11

A strange relationship led to a number of funny moments and was powered by goofball charm.

Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix formed the power couple, Glamarella. Marella held the Intercontinental title, while Phoenix was the Women's Champion at the time.

Phoenix was the dominant one of the pair, often overpowering and beating up her man.

It was a tense, and at times unsettling, relationship to watch unfold. Marella's comedy balanced well with Phoenix's intensity.

Theirs was an endearing story, but not nearly as dramatic or powerful as the ones ranked above it.

9. Eddie Guerrero and Chyna

3 of 11

One of the most surprising couples featured "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero and his mamacita, Chyna.

Guerrero often gave Chyna flowers before matches and passionately doted on her. Their relationship was a silly one, producing a number of funny moments like Chyna's attempt at speaking Spanish and the two lovers playing Twister.

It didn't lead to high-profile feuds or change the WWE landscape in the way that the storylines above it did, but the Chyna-Guerrero relationship was fun.

It's not often that losing a championship to one's boyfriend sends a relationship downward, but that's exactly what happened when Guerrero defeated Chyna for the Intercontinental title in a match involving Kurt Angle.

8. Kane and Lita

4 of 11

Kane's and Lita's story walked the line between entertaining and disturbing. As easily as one could argue that the angle went too far with Lita's miscarriage, one could make the case that it was the controversy and discomfort the story created that kept fans glued to it.

Kane won the right to marry Lita after defeating Matt Hardy in a "Til Death Do Us Part" match at SummerSlam 2004.

Their relationship from that point was creepy, Kane blending aggression with passion, serving as both Lita's torturer and admirer.

The story had all the soap-opera fodder to keep it interesting: a pregnancy, a forced relationship and a wedding. The wedding, seeing that this was WWE, ended in Matt Hardy and Kane brawling.

7. CM Punk, AJ Lee, Kane, Daniel Bryan

5 of 11

Daniel Bryan's and AJ Lee's tumultuous relationship morphed into a love triangle and then a love square during the three-man feud in the summer of 2012.

AJ's involvement in the feud added intrigue. Her instability and relationship-hopping ways became the hit of the summer. She apparently had the hots for Bryan, CM Punk and Kane at the same time. She showed them how she felt by dressing up like each star.

She looked great in Punk's gear, but not quite as much in Kane's mask.

Her obsessive approach to love was entertaining largely because it was hard to predict what would happen next. This was a unique romance angle, one that included a string of quality matches involving the objects of her affection.

While not as monumental as the stories above it on this list, it was compelling and made AJ the biggest diva in the company during this time.

6. Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kurt Angle

6 of 11

The jealousy and cracks in a stable relationship that this angle featured were reminiscent of the Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and Elizabeth story years before it.

Kurt Angle's odd relationship with Triple H's wife, though, had its own unique flair. Angle claimed that he just wanted to be friends with Stephanie McMahon. Triple H inferred that this was because Angle was gay.

The edgy, emotional angle had everything from kissing to an intense, personal match at Unforgiven 2000 where Stephanie got physically involved.

5. Christian, Trish Stratus and Chris Jericho

7 of 11

The story of Christian, Chris Jericho and Trish Stratus sounds like the plot for a teen drama.

Betrayal, a broken friendship, misunderstandings and guys betting over who could sleep with a girl first were all a part of this tale. As corny as it was at times, it did have emotional resonance and led to a good match between Jericho and Christian at WrestleMania XX.

This is when Stratus turned on Jericho, drawing blazing heat on her and Christian.

The well-told story made up for most of its cheesiness by drawing fans in with an entertaining arc.

4. Mickie James and Trish Stratus

8 of 11

Mickie James went from Trish Stratus' biggest fan to a woman obsessed with her idol, whom she both wanted to become and apparently to make out with too.

WWE's version of Single White Female was one of its most intriguing storylines.

James began to steal Stratus' moves, to follow her everywhere, to sneak into her dressing room and put on her clothes. This was a twisted love story, one where the battle for the Women's Championship was just one of many interesting elements.

3. Test, Stephanie and Triple H

9 of 11

Few WWE stories, romance-themed or otherwise, have had as much impact on a star and company history like Triple H swooping in and marrying a drugged Stephanie McMahon.

Test and Stephanie were set to get married, but it's not often that WWE weddings go well, and he found that out firsthand.

Triple H came down to the ring and showed a clip of him driving an unconscious Stephanie through a drive-through wedding chapel in Las Vegas. As shocking as that moment was, seeing Stephanie later turn on Test and her own father at Armageddon 1999 was an even bigger moment.

This betrayal led to the McMahon-Helmsley Era and to Triple H becoming one of the most hated men in the company.

2. Matt Hardy, Lita and Edge

10 of 11

Real life collided with kayfabe and resulted in an explosive rivalry that catapulted Edge into one of the top heels in WWE history.

Lita was in both an on-screen and real-life relationship with Matt Hardy. She cheated on him with Edge, and WWE pounced on the heat those two were getting from fans.

The resulting storyline featured a vicious Street Fight between Hardy and Edge and a wedding, which of course ended in destruction.

Drawing from what was really happening with Lita, Hardy and Edge helped create one of the most enthralling and emotional stories in WWE history. As well as the best can fake hatred, there is nothing like the real thing.

1. Miss Elizabeth and Randy Savage

11 of 11

Longevity and iconic status make Randy Savage and Elizabeth's story the best WWE romance ever.

Elizabeth's charm balanced out Savage's gruffness and eccentricity.

She stood by Savage's side as Ric Flair accused her of being "damaged goods." She played a major role in the Jake Roberts-Savage feud and, most famously, the Mega Powers splitting up.

The latter is a story of Savage's jealousy of Hulk Hogan and Elizabeth destroying that allegiance, leading to a match between the former partners at WrestleMania V.

Elizabeth's and Savage's up-and-down relationship is the most enduring WWE love story partially because of how it drew from their real life, but also because it was a part of so many great stories.

Elizabeth added class to the company and helped make Savage the megastar he became.
