Serena Williams' Biggest Obstacles in Path Towards Claiming Second French Open

Richard LangfordJun 8, 2018

Serena Williams is in great position to win her second French Open. She has an easy draw and has been in great form on clay this year.

The title would be a nice addition to her resume. Williams has 15 major titles under her belt, but just one of those came at the French, and it was way back in 2002. She has won every other major at least four times, and she hasn't even made the finals at Roland Garros since her triumph.

This year, Serena has won three titles on clay and has yet to drop a match on the slippery surface. She showed every bit of that dominance in her Round 1 win over Anna Tatishvili, 6-0, 6-1.

In that match, Serena belted eight aces, won 73 percent of first-serve points, 88 percent of second-serve points, blasted 27 winners and took 62 percent of Tatishvili's service points—with the stats coming via RolandGarros.com.

The win helped her avenge her first-round exit, her only in a major, at last year's French, and it was vintage Serena. If she keeps this form, she will be tough to stop.

Serena should not be tested early in this tournament. So, let's look ahead at who could present her biggest challenges down the line.

Caroline Wozniacki

Williams will not face much resistance in her path towards the semifinals. The player with the most potential to eliminate her is former No. 1, Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki has not been at her best this year. She entered the French with just a 16-12 on the year and no titles. She has also never found much success at the French as she's never made it past the quarterfinals—which just so happens to be where she would meet Serena this year should the two make it.

While the above mentioned facts do not offer a lot of hope for Wozniacki in this tournament, she looked great in dispatching of the talented Laura Robson, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

Also, the 22-year-old moves great across the court. This is always handy on clay courts, and it could help her combat Williams' power.

Agnieszka Radwanska

As the No. 4 seed, Agnieszka Radwanska poses the toughest threat for Serena in the semifinals, and Radwanska looked great in her French opener.

She needed less than an hour to beat Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-1.

While Radwanska has won two titles this year and has a bright future, there is no reason Serena shouldn't be able to handle her.

Clay is not Radwanska's preferred surface, and she is just 2-2 on the red stuff this year.

Also, in five head-to-head matches with Serena, she has won just one set, and in their lone battle on clay, she managed to win just four games while losing in straight sets. However, that was back in 2008, and the 24-year-old has made nice strides since.

Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka sit as the top seeds on the opposite side of the bracket from Serena. Neither has had much success against Serena.

So, I went with Sharapova here because, as the defending French champ, she is more comfortable on clay than Azarenka, and I give her the edge to not only make it to the finals, but to present problems for Serena should they meet.

Still, Sharapova can't be thrilled at the prospect of facing Serena. These two have met 15 times with Sharapova winning just two of them, and she hasn't done so since 2004.

Three times these two great champions have met on clay, and Sharapova has claimed just one of those sets. They faced off on clay earlier this year in Madrid and Serena cruised 6-1, 6-4.

Looking at this draw, it becomes quickly apparent that things are setting up well for Serena to add another major title to her collection.
