Americans Abroad Wrap: Clint Dempsey Scores Vital Goal for Tottenham

John D. HalloranJun 8, 2018

It was another thrilling weekend of action for Americans plying their trade abroad as Clint Dempsey scored a goal that helped keep Tottenhamโ€™s Champions League dreams alive and Mix Diskerud had a stunner for Rosenborg in the Tippeligaen.

Alejandro Bedoya and Sacha Kljestan also scored this week in midweek action.

Check out video of the goals from Dempsey, Bedoya and Kljestan as well as news on the nine Americans involved in relegation battles in this weekโ€™s edition of the Americans Abroad Wrap.

Tottenham vs. Manchester City

1 of 5

Clint Dempsey played the hero role for Tottenham on Sunday, providing the equalizer with only 15 minutes to play to help spark a 3-1 Spurs comeback over Manchester City.

Tottenham now lie only one point from a Champions League place with five games to go.

In addition to the goal, Dempsey played well in the match. He provided a gorgeous pass to Kyle Walker, putting Walker in behind Cityโ€™s defense in the 22nd minute, and troubled Cityโ€™s back line on several occasions, having two penalty appeals after contact in the box.

Brad Friedel did not play.

The English Contingent

2 of 5

Stoke City beat the lowly Queens Park Rangers, securing three points and moving Stoke six points away from the drop zone. The win likely secures Stokeโ€™s status as an EPL team for the 2013-14 season.

However, the win came with Geoff Cameron being dropped from the starting XI and Brek Shea not in the 18. Cameronโ€™s only action came when he was brought on as a stoppage-time substitute as Stoke was killing off the game. Shea has not gotten into a game for Stoke in six weeks.

Aston Villa and their American contingent of Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj take on Manchester United on Monday. Villa currently sit three points clear of relegation with five games to go. To get an idea of how bad Villa's defense has been in front of Guzan this year, Guzan was the first keeper in the league this season to make it to 200 saves.

Tim Howard made three saves in Evertonโ€™s 1-0 loss to Sunderland. In the 45th minute, Howard made a world-class stop on a Sunderland free kick, but seconds later a bad giveaway by Leighton Baines led to Sunderlandโ€™s goal. The loss likely kills off Evertonโ€™s Champions League hopes.

In the English Championship, Jonathan Spector was not in the 18 as Birmingham beat Leeds 1-0. Spector has not been in the lineup for Birmingham since injuring his ankle two weeks ago. Will Packwood is also injured.

Bolton beat Middlesbrough 2-1 as they fight for a spot in the English Championshipโ€™s promotion playoffs. Tim Ream was in the 18 for Bolton, but did not feature.

Sheffield Wednesday tied Ipswich 1-1 and are four points above the relegation zone with two games to play. Stuart Holden was not in the 18 for Wednesday.

Ze Germans

Jermaine Jones returned from injury and came on as a 64th-minute substitute in Schalkeโ€™s 1-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. With four games to go, Schalke is clinging to a Champions League qualification spot by one point.

Hoffenheim lost 5-0 to Bayer Leverkusen and now sit six points from safety with four games to go. Fabian Johnson went the distance. Danny Williams did not make the 18 and has not played with the first team in five weeks.

Steve Cherundolo and Hannover lost 6-1 to already-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Cherundolo started the match and played 66 minutes. The game was Cherundolo's 298th game for Hannover, setting a club record.

Timmy Chandler and Nurnberg lost 1-0 to Bundesliga bottom-dwellers Greuther Furth. Chandler started the game at right midfield and was taken off at the half.

Augsburg lost 1-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday, but Michael Parkhurst was not in the 18 for Augsburg, who sit in the relegation zone three points from safety. Parkhurst played his last match for Augsburg over five weeks ago.

In Bundesliga 2, John Anthony Brooks and Hertha Berlin beat Sandhausen 1-0 to guarantee Herthaโ€™s promotion to the Bundesliga next season. Brooks played 25 minutes in the contest.

St. Pauli lost to Bochum 3-0. Joe Gyau made the 18, but did not play. St. Pauli sit five points above the relegation zone with four games to play.

1860 Munich lost 2-1 to FSV Frankfurt. Bobby Wood did not get into the game for 1860 Munich.
