After nearly six years in the company—and being one of the most popular women on the entire roster at one point—Blank parted ways with it last September.
Her release meant she was yet another woman to exit WWE: Gail Kim, Melina, Maxine, Kharma and Beth Phoenix have also parted ways with America's No. 1 wrestling promotion over the last 18 months.
You wonder why the division is in the state it's in? This is at least partly why.
Since then, she's been focusing on her career in the mainstream, releasing an official calendar and appearing on MTV2's Guy Code.
Of course, in recent weeks, reports (PWInsider via Diva Dirt) have emerged, noting that WWE has been back in contact with Blank—and other ex-Divas—about possibly coming back for a WrestleMania match. Obviously, negotiations fell through and the proposed bout never actually happened.
In this week's (subscribers-only) Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discusses why WWE had such problems re-signing Blank, in particular:
Kelly Kelly, who now has dark hair, was giving the impression she was enjoying being off the road and is still with Sheldon Souray of the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL, who is a year into a three-year contract at $3.7 million per year so money apparently isn’t as strong a motivating factor to her as it may be to others...Kelly asked for a higher guarantee to come back than offered and also wanted the rights to use the Kelly Kelly name on outside projects and that’s where things ended, as the company decided to go in another direction for Mania.
The name issue isn't truly a surprise. After all, Blank got famous as “Kelly Kelly.” Indeed, many fans still refer to her as such. Certainly, ex-Divas like Maryse, Mickie James and Gail Kim were in a much better position to capitalize on their WWE notoriety because they went by their real names during their time there.
Meltzer also commented on Blank's issues with former Diva Maria Kanellis.
Would you like to see Kelly Kelly back in WWE?
Per reports (PWInsider via WrestlingInc), Kanellis, who was released from WWE in 2010, had been approached by WWE about a potential return for WrestleMania, but heat with the other women nixed it.
It appears that some candid comments Kanellis made during her stint on AfterBuzz TV's post-Raw discussion show may have cost her dearly.
Per Meltzer, Blank even took to complaining to WWE's resident celebrity star Maria Menounos about the matter. "Kelly had called Maria Menounos and asked if she could put a lid on Kanellis because Kanellis had talked about saying more personal things about her on the air."
