Ian Kinsler Delivers a Special Performance on Jackie Robinson Day.

The number 42 should now hold an even deeper meaning for Ranger second baseman Ian Kinsler. On Jackie Robinson day, he turned in the best performance of his career to date with a 6-6 cycle. The coincidence was not lost on Kinsler who was quoted after the game as saying:

“It is more special to do it on Jackie Robinson Day,” Kinsler said. “He’s the guy who could do everything in the game, hit triples, hit home runs, steal bases, score runs, do everything. It is weird that it’s Jackie Robinson Day and I’m playing second base, but it’s great it happened that way.”

The cycle in and of itself is a rare event, occurring at about the same rate as the elusive no hitter. How cool is it that we almost had both in the same night?

The cycle is not without its statistical oddities. Of the 252 players that have accomplished this, only 11 players, including Kinsler, have recorded two doubles in a cycle game.

No player has ever hit two triples in a cycle game.

Three players have hit two home runs in a cycle game: George Brett, Greg Colbrunn, and Carl Yastrzemski.

Although Charlie Moore had two stolen bases in his cycle, only nine players have ever hit for the cycle and recorded even one stolen base. This list includes three HOFers: Lou Brock, Rod Carew, and Mickey Mantle.

Adrian Beltre, Rondell White, and Kinsler are the only players to score five runs in their cycle. I am sure there are many more quick facts about the cycle out there. How many can you find?
