Arsenal are reportedly interested in making a move for Toulouse defender Etienne Capoue over the summer transfer window, according to the latest reports.
The Telegraph reports that the Gunners—who recently lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in their North London Derby—tried to sign Capoue over the winter transfer window, but were too late and will resume their interest in the defender once the summer transfer window opens.
Arsenal retain a strong interest in signing Etienne Capoue from Toulouse this summer, despite failing in a late attempt to buy the France international during the January transfer window. Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, already has his scouts planning for the next transfer window, with the holding midfield and striker positions still regarded as the main priority.
Capoue has been watched extensively and, as well as offering additional physical strength in central midfield, he would provide extra cover at centre-back. Arsenal did not directly replace Alex Song last summer, with Mikel Arteta being largely relied upon this season to perform the screening role in front of the defence.
Capoue has played at both defender, defensive midfield and central midfield already for his club this year (per WhoScored.com) and has four goals and two assists to his name so far. Moreover, the French international is averaging over 65 completed passes per game, as well as two tackles and interceptions each—making him a great all-around player to look into.
Transfermarkt currently lists the defender at around £10 million, but given the willingness of Arsene Wenger to splash out the £8.5 million needed for Nacho Monreal, you'd have to think that he'll likely pull the trigger here, if he thinks it's a good deal.
The veteran manager is coming under a myriad of criticisms for his current transfer policy, and will most likely splash out over the summer transfer window.
According to The Telegraph, the club's financial position is looking strong for the new season. With the release of advanced funds from the new Emirates sponsorship deal, plus the possible departure of Sebastien Squillaci and Andrei Arshavin, the club should have plenty of money to splash.
The report is that around £70 million should be available for the North London club who, even if they lose the £35 million they would make for qualifying for the Champions League, would still have a plethora of transfer options to consider for the new year ahead.
And in Arsenal's case, the addition of Capoue is an option they must make.
It would free up Jack Wilshere to play more attacking if needed and take some of the pressure off Mikel Arteta. It would also likely help solidify a defensive unit that's only kept three clean sheets since Christmas and continues to give up the simplest of goals to their opponents.
Capoue is an astute deal that the Gunners must make over the summer.
