It may sound crazy, but what if Kofi Kingston won the 2013 Royal Rumble match?

Kofi Kingston is most known for being a midcard superstar in WWE and is widely expected to be so for the remainder of his career. However, a Royal Rumble win would certainly change that. It could be one of the most surprising and least expected wins in Royal Rumble history.

Why in the world would anyone think that Mr. Midcard himself, even has a chance to win the Royal Rumble?

Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Triple H, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

What do all these former WWE superstars have in common? They were an Intercontinental champion prior to being a World champion.

The WWE Intercontinental Championship used to be a title that would take an up-and-coming superstar and help them get noticed. It would be a stepping stone that told fans that in a short while, that WWE superstar would be a World champion.

Kofi Kingston has held the Intercontinental Championship multiple times before, so it is understandable if you don’t believe he belongs in the same category of the aforementioned superstars. In fact, I wrote about how Wade Barrett should have won the title at WWE TLC 2012 because Kofi would most likely never be World champion.

WWE could easily change that if Kofi Kingston were to win the Royal Rumble this year. Kofi could become another former Intercontinental champion to win the Rumble and become a World champion.

Keep in mind that the Royal Rumble winner is not always the superstar you have in mind. Last year, Chris Jericho was a popular guess to win the Rumble. In past years, superstars such as John Cena and Edge returned early from injury to win the match. They were obviously not expected back nor expected to win.

However, there have definitely been years where the rumble winner was obvious, such as 2009 when Randy Orton won. Orton was the top heel, yet it was JBL who was in the championship match. With the Legacy on his side, Orton was unstoppable. This year has some favorites to win such as John Cena and Ryback. It is much more exciting and interesting to have someone win like Sheamus last year or Kofi Kingston this year.

Kofi Kingston won a Slammy Award this year for his athletic and acrobatic abilities during the 2012 Royal Rumble. While this may not suggest anything for this year’s rumble, Kingston has also been more vocal since becoming a singles star again. His feuds with the Miz and Wade Barrett have included improved promos from Kingston that make you think twice about his mic skills.

A Royal Rumble win by Kofi Kingston could lead to a WrestleMania showdown with CM Punk, his former tag team partner. It would be a true test to Kofi’s mic skills to stand in the ring and go against Punk. While Punk has only moved on the card since they were WWE Tag Team Champions, Kofi has stayed in the midcard as we know.

It may seem a bit out there to think a superstar who has never been pushed to that level would get such a big win at the Royal Rumble, but isn’t that what would make it the most startling win ever?

You may think John Cena, Ryback or even The Rock or CM Punk is going to win the Royal Rumble. However, if for some reason, WWE throws a monkey wrench at the fans and Kofi Kingston is the last man standing, WWE fans will be going boom, boom, boom.
