The uniform bears a different color now, but Demba Ba is still doing what he does best.
Ba, who joined Chelsea from Newcastle United on Friday (via Daily Mail), scored two goals on his Chelsea debut the very next day as the Blues whipped Southampton 5-1 in a third-round FA Cup match Saturday afternoon.
For the first, Ba put himself in the right place at the right time to tap in from short distance following Eden Hazard's long dribble into the Southampton box. That goal made the score 1-1 late in the first half, and both Chelsea and Ba just went on from there.
Victor Moses put Chelsea ahead 2-1 in first-half stoppage time. Branislav Ivanovic made it 3-1 early in the second half, and then Ba scored his second in the 61st minute after some nice work with his new teammates.
First, Ba held off a defender in the Southampton box. Then he started and finished a move that included Hazard's final pass from the edge of the other side of the box.
With that, Ba was off to a flying start in his Chelsea career. Both goals appear in the clip above, which serves as our Set Piece Video of the Day for this FA Cup Sunday.
"It is a great achievement for him and hopefully he can score a lot of goals until the end of the season," Rafael Benitez said of Ba (via Daily Telegraph). "We will be happy and he will be happy if that happens."
So, now we have a few questions on our hands.
How many will Ba score this season? How many might he score with Chelsea? And does this spell trouble for Fernando Torres in West London?
Torres needed 14 games to score his first Chelsea goal, and he cost £50 million. Ba needed only 35 minutes—and he cost just over £7 million.
Make of that what you will.
