As a direct rebuttal to the National Hockey League cancelling the Winter Classic on January 1 between long-time rivals Toronto and Detroit, the Bikini Hockey League is planning to hold their own New Year’s Day contest.

The match is tentatively scheduled for Superior Arena (formerly known as Belle Tire Arena) in Fraser, Michigan.

The contest will be the first in Bikini Hockey League history.

Of note: 10 women participated in the taping of a reality show for the Bikini Hockey League (which included a taped match as part of the program). Also, there will be 26 women from throughout North America ready to participate with age groups ranging from 19 to 39.

Erin Honto is the hometown hero for this match. Currently working as a lingerie model in New York, the 28-year-old had a prominent junior career in Michigan. She competed at the AAA level for Michigan clubs such as Belle Tire, Little Caesars and Honeybaked.

At the age of 16, she was invited to the Lake Placid Olympic Fest. During her junior career, Honto was part of five state championship teams in Michigan.

Described as an aggressive defenseman who can take the body, Honto also played boys' hockey in high school. During the taping of the reality show, Honto and Jules Mernaugh, a former roller derby player and mixed martial arts performer, got into a fist fight.

Honto’s smash-mouth type of hockey may make some new fans in front of her hometown.

Although tickets will be made available, fans worldwide can view the event through internet pay-per-view. If sponsorship agreements are not reached by December 15, the match may not take place.

Should everything go as planned, the New Year’s Day match is planned as the showcase event to launch the new league.
