According to the Associated Press (via FOX Sports):

Former world boxing champion Hector ''Macho'' Camacho was shot in the face as he sat in a car outside the Puerto Rican capital Tuesday, and doctors said he was in serious condition but expected to survive.

The report also gives an explanation of the injury from Dr. Ernesto Torres:

The bullet apparently struck him in the jaw but exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae, Torres said. The doctor said the boxer, who was trailed by drug and alcohol problems during a career that included some high-profile bouts, could be paralyzed from the shooting.

Torres also added that ''Camacho's condition is extremely delicate. His physical condition will help him but we will see.''

The news comes from TMZ:

The former boxing champ was reportedly in the passenger seat of a car around 7 PM local time ... when another vehicle rolled up and someone opened fire ... striking Camacho several times in the neck and face.

The driver of Camacho's car was reportedly killed in the attack.

According to reports, Camacho was taken to a hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Camacho is a legend in the boxing world. During an extremely impressive career in which he held multiple championship belts, the famous Puerto Rican went 79-6-3 and earned 45 wins by knockout.

He even bested the legendary Roberto Duran twice, the second of which sent Duran into retirement. He knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard and went toe-to-toe with Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya during the downslope of his career.

So, it's easy to see exactly what Camacho means to the boxing world and just how crushing this disastrous news has the potential to be.

There are still many unknown details in this story, but it's safe to say this is news that no one wanted to hear regarding Camacho's out-of-ring exploits.
