Fort Larned won the final marquee event of the 2012 horse racing season on Saturday night when he defeated a talented field to finish first in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
With its $5 million purse, trainers put their horses through intense training sessions to fully prepare for one of the richest and most competitive races in the world.
The thrill of victory isn't an unusual feeling for those associated with Fort Larned, who is owned by Janis Whitham and trained by Ian Wilkes. Their horse has now won four races this season, and three of his last four races.
In eight races this year, Fort Larned has finished worse than fourth place just twice, and since June he has been one of the most consistent horses in the entire sport. The Breeders' Cup Classic triumph was the sixth win in Fort Larned's impressive career.
