With WWE’s Night of Champions pay-per-view scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16, the excitement over one of the company’s more prestigious secondary shows is through the roof.
As much as the heart attack Jerry “The King” Lawler suffered on Raw has shaken many of the fans, the show must go on and it will be one of the year’s best in support of the longtime color commentator.
To make the night go smoother, we will help guide you through what to expect by predicting every match on the card. Be warned, there is a spoiler at the bottom from SmackDown.
WWE Champion CM Punk vs. John Cena
As great as the buildup has been for this match, the outcome has been set for months—CM Punk must retain his WWE Title against John Cena at night of Champions. After just turning heel and building all this new momentum, the last thing the WWE wants is to lose that all in one night.
If they are truly building to The Rock vs. CM Punk at the Royal Rumble for the WWE title, he will win Sunday, verbally destroy Boston and retain until that event.
Predicted Winner: CM Punk
World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio
With CM Punk retaining the WWE title later in the night, the WWE will compensate with one of the most convoluted world title scenes in recent memory. This prediction involves the match below (Dolph Ziggler vs. Randy Orton) to make sense, but Sheamus will lose this match to Alberto Del Rio after not being able to use his brogue kick.
After an intense battle that makes both stars look strong, Ziggler will come down and cash in his briefcase on Del Rio who is too tired to fight out. Continue on in the next portion to understand why this happens.
Predicted Winner: Alberto Del Rio
Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler
Prior to this match, Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler will pay Wade Barrett to attack his old enemy Randy Orton and take him out. After getting beaten down, Randy Orton will come out hurt to his match and Ziggler will dominate throughout. RKO will get the win at the very end, causing Barrett to come back out and destroy RKO, thus starting their feud.
As for Ziggler, he looks strong throughout the match and is over more as a heel, but as we find out later, he will become the new world champion.
Predicted Winner: Randy Orton
WWE Tag Team Champions R-Truth & Kofi Kingston vs. Kane & Daniel Bryan
As much as Kofi Kingston and R-Truth have gotten over with the younger fans, this is the dawning of a new tag team era. While Daniel Bryan and Kane haven’t been a tag team for very long, they are light-years better than anything we’ve had over the last five years.
Predicted Winner: Kane and Daniel Bryan
Divas Champion Layla vs. Kaitlyn
Layla will retain her title over Kaitlyn in a match that has little build and even less talent. Please, WWE, give the fans less models and more real wrestlers like Kharma, Beth Phoenix or Sara Del Rey fighting for the title. Is that too much to ask?
Predicted Winner: Layla
Pre-Show Battle Royal to name No. 1 Contender to U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro
While many fans in the IWC are pulling for Antonio Cesaro to be a serious champion, the WWE is not giving him anything to run with as of yet. The hope is that out of this Battle Royal we get the biggest face star in the mix and the company allows Cesaro to win. C’mon Christian.
Predicted Winner: Antonio Cesaro
Intercontinental Champion The Miz vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Sin Cara vs. Rey Mysterio
After it was revealed on SmackDown that The Miz would defend his title against Cody Rhodes, Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio, the most likely outcome is for the champion to retain the title. With the WWE trying to bring validity to the secondary championship, having Miz go over three of the better wrestlers is a no-brainer.
Predicted Winner: The Miz
