Ohio State Football: Devin Smith Makes Statement with Catch of Year Candidate

Brian MaziqueSep 1, 2012

Hello, Devin Smith, is this what you do to one-on-one coverage?

It's only Week 1 of the college football season, and the Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver is already turning in amazing plays.

This certainly inspires an are you kidding me? response.

Take a look at this effort:

This grab is straight out of NCAA Football 13. It culminated a four-play, 83-yard TD drive for the Buckeyes. The pass and catch went for 23 yards and gave Ohio State a 7-3 lead.

But totally separate from the score is the sheer awesomeness of the grab. It's not just a one-handed stab—Smith snagged, controlled and rolled with the ball.

He maintained control of the ball through the process, and the way he rose to his feet after the grab added the requisite swag.

It was the first catch of the season for the 6'1", 196-pound sophomore, but with that type of physical ability, Braxton Miller would be wise to look in Smith's direction a little more this season.

This is easily an early candidate for play and catch of the year.
