Michael Vick to Be Released To House Arrest; What's Next For Him?

Larry BurtonFeb 27, 2009

Before the start of this upcoming NFL season, Michael Vick will turn 29, a young age for an NFL quarterback. He had, at one time, almost unmatchable skills and playmaking abilities, so why is his release and upcoming reinstatement talks to the NFL seemingly producing little more than a yawn among NFL managers?

It could be that his image is so sullied that teams don't wish to have permanent PETA protests outside the stadium every game. It could be that 97 percent of all Americans over 18 years old have owned a pet they loved. Maybe it's because nobody felt there was a true and heartfelt apology and remorse.

Vick is due to move into his house in Virginia any day now and spend the last two months of his confinement in house arrest, with him being able to leave the property only with the permission of his probation officer. Whether that will include him being able to work out with an NFL team remains to be seen.

Roger Goodell suspended Vick without pay following his conviction. He has repeatedly said he will review Vick's status only after all legal proceedings are completed. It is widely believed, however, that Vick will be allowed to play.

The question is, will he? What team will be willing to take the heat that signing him will bring to go along with the offense he may could still generate? Am I the only one thinking Al Davis here?

Davis has been longing for a return to "Raider Glory" and a large part of that history and mystique was their "Bad Boy" image. What better way to recapture that image than with a Vick hire?

This will certainly be a story to follow for all football fans. Vick's agent, Joel Segal, did not drop him as a client, and feels there is still some gold to be mined there. It has been reported that Segal has been contacting many teams to gauge interest. It is unknown what the responses have been.

With his image shattered, his finances in bankruptcy, and his fan base gone, Vick has nowhere to go but up. Is there an NFL team out there willing to give him a lift? Stay tuned and we'll see.
