Arsenal Are Ready to Have Their Best Season Yet

Hasmat MustunAug 19, 2012

After a goalless opening game against Sunderland, Arsenal were quickly branded as non-title challengers by pundits Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer on Match of the Day. Some Arsenal fans have also voiced their concerns over the team's performance.

Yet let us remember that Arsenal drew the game but did not lose it. Arsenal created most of their chances, and the man behind all the creativity was their summer signing, Santi Cazorla.

Cazorla was excellent throughout with blistering movements and incredible vision to create virtually all the chances in the game. He is going to be a special player for Arsenal.

After the departure of Robin van Persie to Manchester United, all eyes were on Lukas Podolski. But the German international failed to really sparkle, clearly lacking match fitness and a stronger presence.

That striker's typical presence came from Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman has showed great instinct and excellent movement whilst on the pitch. The combination between the new signings looked good, but more time is required for them to fully settle.

The moment of the match was a lovely pass from Cazorla to Giroud, who lost his defender to fire the ball well wide. Giroud rushed the strike and lacked the composure that made him top scorer of Ligue 1 last season. This does not mean Giroud will fail. This is just his first game, and he must be given time to fully integrate to life in England and into the team.

Remember that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry went weeks before opening his Gunners account. He is still the all time goalscorer for Arsenal today.

Despite some negativity and the on going question as to how Arsenal will replace Van Persie, which everyone has been obsessing over since the game, I believe the Gunners are almost ready to have their best season in a long time.

Arsene Wenger has ridden the club of lower-class players: Bendtner is expected to leave very soon, according to SkySports.

Song departed for Barcelona. He became the seventh player to leave for the Catalan giant after Arsenal agreed a reported £15 million fee. More talk amongst fans began stating the craziness of this latest deal.

Song was a great player and had the potential to make it as a world-class player. But last season's praise is mostly due to his assists and not his defensive duties. Arsene Wenger knows when it is the right time to part company with any player. Both deals were good business for the sake of the club.

The latest news is that Sahin will be unveiled as a Gunner within the next 48 hours, claims David Ornstein of BBC Sport. It is also widely expected that Arsenal will tie up a deal for Yann M'vila by the end of the transfer window.

Sahin would be the ideal playmaker to come into the team and help Cazorla with creativity. He is likened to Xabi Alonso for his amazing passing abilities.

If these two players were added to the squad, Arsenal would be ready to finish in the top three. Whilst fans call for a forward to replace Van Persie, I'm more concerned about the defence. Arsenal conceded more than 40 goals last season. The Gunners need a new defender.

Nevertheless, I'm optimistic about the season ahead, I just wish everyone would give the team some time before writing off their chances.

New players, new captain, new mentality. Time to step and prove everyone wrong. This is the season to do it.
