Arsenal Transfer Report: Robin van Persie to Play for Arsenal Next Weekend

Max TowleJun 7, 2018

Despite ongoing speculation regarding his future at the club, it seems Arsenal's wantaway striker Robin van Persie will line up against Sunderland next weekend in the Gunners' first game of the Premier League season.

The Dutchman's current state of fitness was recently discussed by national team coach Louis van Gaal, who revealed to reporters that he is prepared to give Van Persie at least a half of football in an upcoming friendly (h/t The Mirror).

The report also suggested that Van Persie's current state of mind is positive, contrasting with rumours that he was sulking his way through preseason training to force through a move.

"Arsenal insiders insist Van Persie’s attitude to preseason training and preparation for the new campaign is faultless," the story reveals. "He does not appear to be a player making waves to force a move."

Also discussed is the possibility that Van Persie may keep the captain's armband, at least for the opening few games of the season until his future is resolved.

Primed to take over, though, should boss Arsene Wenger decide to strip the Dutchman of the honour, is current club vice-captain Thomas Vermaelen.

The central defender has impressed since making the move from Dutch club Ajax in 2009 and is the favourite for many to lead the club into the future.

According to the report, Wenger is not prepared to accept less than £25 million for Van Persie, despite Manchester United appearing unwilling to offer more than £15 million.

From The Mirror, "Even though Manchester United are waiting in the wings in the belief they will be able to meet Van Persie’s pay demands, the player is on course to start the new season with the Gunners."

Fans of both clubs will no doubt find out if the two can reach a deal in the coming few weeks, with the transfer window set to close at the end of the month.
