The departure of midfielder Alex Song is fast approaching, with Barcelona the favorites to obtain him. The club has already agreed to terms with Song before negotiating a transfer fee with Arsenal. The deal could be completed in the coming days.
Assuming all goes as reported, the Gunners are left with a big hole at midfield. That void would be best filled with Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin. The 23-year-old signed with Madrid last year after winning a title with Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal have shown interest in Sahin on season-long loan but have encountered issues in negotiations, according to Waleed Abu Nada.
Arsenal are interested in the Turkish play maker but the club have faced difficulties with Real Madrid over signing him on loan. Arsenal want a clause that will allow them to permanently buy Sahin after his loan deal expires, however, Real Madrid don’t want that as Nuri still has five years left in his contract with the Spanish giants and they want him in their squad if he impresses in England. Discussions over the loan fee have been a problem too.
Jose Mourinho has given his blessing to let Sahin go where he pleases, but allowing Arsenal to buy him after the season is up may not be in the cards. If they can only get him on loan, it may not be worth the price, as it would inhibit the development of other players.
Regardless, the addition of a player like Sahin would immediately make an impact, especially after the departure of Song. He is a great defensive midfielder that can also help set up the attack.
An option to buy Sahin at the end of the loan would be a phenomenal deal for Arsenal, but it remains to be seen what will come of negotiations. Even a long-season loan will help regain what will be lost when Song goes to Barca.
