He’s at it again.
By now, a good number of you have likely read the latest comments from Kevin Nash, and at this point you’re probably somewhere between ticked off and thoroughly disgusted.
Or, you’re just ready to kill the guy.
He’s a lightning rod for controversy, and has been for years. Just when you think you’ve heard the last of him, he suddenly pops up—seemingly from out of nowhere—and reminds all of us why he has earned the reputation of being a king mixer.
That means he likes stirring the pot. Anyone get that random Hard Days Night reference?
This time, Big Sexy’s comments came as part of an interview which appeared yesterday on Grantland.com. Nash talked about a variety of topics, including his constant insomnia, his acting career, and yes, the business of professional wrestling.
Perhaps the most unexpected, and surely infuriating statement in the minds of many fans, concerns the night of WrestleMania XX..
“When Benoit and Guerrero hugged, that was the end of the business. Has business been the same since that WrestleMania? Has it come close to the Austin era? Has it come close to the nWo or the Hogan era? You put two f*****g guys that were great workers that were the same height as the f*****g referees, and, I’m sorry, man.”
Sufficiently upset? Well, you should be.
Why? I’ll get to that in a minute. By the way, Big Kev was not done yet.
“They are not bigger than life. I bet they both could walk through airports and not be noticed unless they have a gimmick shirt on and the belt.”
This time, he was referring to arguably the two hottest guys in WWE, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.
When Kevin Nash goes on a rant, he means business. Like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going, and going, and going.
So, for those of you who are ready to burn your nWo T-Shirts, or drive a steamroller over your collection of Diesel related merchandise, let me say once again that you are indeed justified in your frustration.
Because this is the response he’s looking for.
That’s right, the pro wrestler is doing what pro wrestlers have done from the very beginning. He’s doing what comes naturally.
He’s working you.
Does that mean that he does not believe what he said about not only Guerrero and Benoit, but Punk and Bryan? Not at all. Nash is a big man, and perhaps he does feel that only big guys deserve the spotlight. And, let’s not forget that he’s outspoken, and tends to say whatever is on his mind at the time.
The truth is, Kevin is the villain because we expect him to be. It’s his role to play.
He says what he says to get a rise out of fans. There is no mystery here, no deep meaning behind his words. He enjoys dropping one pipe bomb after another, and then sitting back, happy to watch the fireworks.
That’s right, Punk. He’s using your shtick.
And, fans are not the only ones taking exception to Nash’s words. It seems that Y2J has some criticism of his own, suggesting on Twitter that maybe Kevin had no room to talk about pro wrestling’s death when it was Nash who was on top of WWE in 1995, amidst the worst business ever.
Who said Chris Jericho didn’t have your back?
The fact is, Superstars have disagreements all the time. These guys are only human, and just because they’re in the same fraternity, does not mean that they always get along. Everyone has their own views, and often times, those views are expressed for the whole world to see.
Or, Jericho is just having some fun with us as well.
The truth is, you don’t know. None of us do. That’s the best part about the business, the unknown aspect, the constant doubt that comes with an industry that is typically filled with more questions than answers.
As for Kevin Nash and his ongoing criticisms that make you want to see something really bad happen to him, I say take it in stride. This whole debacle will blow over eventually, and everything will go back to being relatively quiet.
Then, Nash will do what does best. He will mix it up once again. It’s his thing, and every time fans get upset over it, they play right into his game.
Kind of like reading an entire column about it.
Hmm. Man, he got me too.
