Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Close in on One Target, Lose out on Another

Frank WagnerJun 7, 2018

Chelsea's eventful summer transfer window after their Champions League title has continued today with two very different reports surrounding possible targets.

In one case, it looks like the Blues are closing in on making a big signing that could affect the club's future for years to come.

In the other, the club seems to have lost the opportunity to sign a desired striker.

Record signing for Oscar?

According to reports, Chelsea is apparently very close to signing 20-year-old Brazilian Oscar and, in the process, break a Brazilian transfer record.

The Internacional midfielder has impressed in his time with both his club and country and will soon be on display at the London Olympics.

Over the past several weeks, Oscar had been linked with moves to both Tottenham and Inter Milan, but it looks like Chelsea have now come in to snatch the wunderkind.

In reference to the possible move, Internacional president Giovanni Luigi said:

"

"I want the transfer of Oscar to be the biggest deal ever in Brazilian football. And the Chelsea offer isn't that far from that. If regarding Oscar we get offers that match our expectations, we'll negotiate. But they have to be of the value that mean significant resources for Internacional."

Schurrle not for sale

A few weeks after German club Bayer Leverkusen were reported to have rejected Chelsea's €20 million offer for Andre Schurrle, the club seems set to keep the striker.

Chelsea were reportedly getting ready to lodge an even more lucrative offer for the 21-year-old, but Bayer general manager Rudi Voller preemptively rejected any offer in an interview with kicker-Sportmagazin:

"

"There is no alternative to the decision of not selling Andre Schurrle. Those adequate players that are available are too expensive and therefore we would be forced to sign a weaker player overpriced. The matter is over with and I have also told Andre so."

"

Schurrle already has seven goals in 16 appearances for Germany, yet was less than impressive in the two matches he appeared in for Germany at Euro 2012.

With the loss of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres's unsteady form, and Daniel Sturridge's recent strange illness troubles, Chelsea's need for a striker is clear.

Signing Schurrle may have been a step toward fixing this problem, but Bayer's decision to hold onto the striker may be a blessing in disguise for the Blues.
