Ray Allen Reportedly Shuns Boston Celtics to Sign with Miami Heat

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Ray Allen had his chance to cash in via free agency one more time before his career comes to an end, but he decided to spurn the dollars for a chance to join the defending NBA champion Miami Heat, according to Heat owner Micky Arison via Twitter:

"

Its 2:30am in London and I was just woken up with great news.Welcome to the family #20!!

— Micky Arison (@MickyArison) July 6, 2012"

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Allen didn't just choose Miami for the sun and the opportunity to win another ring. He also did it to get away from Rajon Rondo.

The deterioration of Ray Allen's relationship with Rajon Rondo played a significant factor in his leaving for Miami, several sources tell Y!

This development throws a huge wrinkle into the Boston Celtics' plans for next season, as they were hoping to re-sign Allen in order to make another run at an NBA championship with their current nucleus.Ā

For the Heat, this move makes them even more dangerous heading into next season. Obviously, the trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris BoshĀ are going to be the stars of the show. They found that balance to be successful in the postseason last year.Ā

Now, with Allen reportedly coming on board, the Heat have the outside sharpshooter that will add another component to the offense.Ā

Despite some anger in Boston, Allen is making a brilliant career move. He doesn't have to do anything in Miami except sit at the three-point line, wait for James, Wade or Bosh to drive the lane, and when they feel trouble, expect the dish to do what he does soĀ well—knock it down from downtown.

The Heat were not expected to be major players in free agency this year because of their limited cap space, but adding Allen might be the sneakiest major move we see this summer. It doesn't set them back financially, and they significantly upgrade their production beyond the arc.
