Arsenal Transfer News: Olivier Giroud Not Robin Van Persie's Replacement

Dan TalintyreJun 29, 2012

The signing of Olivier Giroud is a huge boost for Arsenal over the summer transfer window, just don't expect him to be a replacement for star striker Robin van Persie at the club.

The former Montpellier striker firmly believes that van Persie will be staying at the Emirates, and he will be playing alongside the Dutchman next season—not replacing him.

"

I haven't come to take the place of Van Persie. It would be stupid of me to think this. He had a great season. He scored 30 goals and he has a great credibility here. Van Persie, you can say he is left-footed, like me, but I am confident that we can play together.

When I was little boy, I wanted to play in the Premier League. My heart has always looked for Arsenal. I saw they had [Thierry] Henry, there were also [Patrick] Vieira and [Robert] Pires. A true French touch.

I have always loved the philosophy of their game and the state of mind of this club. The French were very successful there and the quality of life in London is exceptional.

The sentiment must give the Gunners and their fans a huge boost for the upcoming season as they seek to establish themselves as a genuine English Premier League and UEFA Champions League contender once again.

Giroud and van Persie's co-existence at the Emirates remains crucial to their chances as they spearhead the Gunners attack next season. If successful, they could become the most feared duo in the Premier League.

Both have the ability to create opportunities for the other, and both have the scoring skills to find the back of the net. If they can figure out how to do it together, at the same time, it could spell success for the Gunners next season.

No new information is known on van Persie's contract situation. But, with a move to another Premier League team or the Serie A unlikely, remaining at Arsenal appears the most probable outcome for next season.

Can Giroud and van Persie work together at Arsenal?
