10 Matches to Make in the UFC Flyweight Division

Riley KontekJun 7, 2018

The UFC flyweight division is set to explode, pending the championship bout between Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez. Flyweights have already proven to be immensely exciting, which is causing many MMA fans to salivate at the possibilities.

The UFC needs to continue to sign flyweights, so these matchups will include fighters not currently in the UFC. Here are 10 fights that should be made, with no fighter's name being repeated.

Ian McCall vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani

1 of 10

The two men who were eliminated in the flyweight tournament are perfect to match up in their next fights.

McCall is a well-rounded wrestler with solid striking. His jiu-jitsu has come along, which makes him an even more dangerous grappler.

Urushitani was not able to display much in his fight with Joe Benavidez, but he is indeed a top fighter. The two are near the top of the division, so this fight is almost obvious.

John Dodson vs. Louis Gaudinot

2 of 10

A pair of Ultimate Fighter veterans were victorious in their flyweight debuts, which both took place at UFC on FOX 3. This leaves them at similar spots in the division.

Dodson is a dynamic striker, while Gaudinot is a never-give-up submission wrestler. Their style contrast could make a fun fight.

John Lineker vs. Jussier Da Silva

3 of 10

Two Brazilians who would put on a show-stealer would be John Lineker and Jussier da Silva. Lineker, although a loser in his UFC debut, is still an impressive prospect.

Meanwhille, Jussier da Silva may be the best flyweight not currently contracted by the UFC. "Formiga" is 13-1, with his only loss coming to Ian McCall.

This fight would have "Fight of the Night" written all over it.

Chris Cariaso vs. Mamoru Yamaguchi

4 of 10

Chris Cariaso is awaiting his flyweight debut, and an exciting fight matchup would be with Mamoru Yamaguchi.

Cariaso is a great striker, as is Yamaguchi. Both guys are technical and accurate, but that's not to say they lack power. Pitting these two together could only be a positive.

Tim Elliott vs. Josh Ferguson

5 of 10

The Ultimate Fighter veteran Josh Ferguson and fellow flyweight Tim Elliott have one thing in common—they love to fight.

Tim Elliott's effort against John Dodson on short notice definitely proved his worth, as he put in a great three-round effort. Ferguson has not made his UFC flyweight debut, but his time on TUF showed he is a tough customer.

This fight could be a crazy one.

Darren Uyenoyama vs. Mitsuhisa Sunabe

6 of 10

Darren Uyenoyama looked great at bantamweight, so his flyweight debut greatly intrigues me. A guy who could put in a great effort against Uyenoyama is Mitsuhisa Sunabe, a Japanese flyweight not currently with the UFC.

Sunabe is a very well-rounded fighter, but it would be interesting to see how he deals with the larger Uyenoyama. The winner would move up the rankings and be close to a title shot.

Darrell Montague vs. Sean Santella

7 of 10

Darrell Montague and Sean Santella are not currently in the UFC, but they are definitely good enough to be in the company.

Santella is a top-notch ground fighter with great submission skills. Montague is well-rounded, with his only two losses coming to UFC fighters Ian McCall and Robbie Peralta.

This could be a very good chess match.

Rambaa Somdet vs. Josh Rave

8 of 10

Rambaa Somdet is an unbelievable Muay Thai striker, even though he could fight at strawweight. Josh Rave is a well-rounded dark horse who could make a solid run in the UFC.

Just getting Somdet in the UFC would be awesome, but putting him to the test against a well-rounded guy like Rave would prove a lot.

Dustin Ortiz vs. Alexis Vila

9 of 10

Alexis Vila made a name for himself in Bellator's bantamweight division, which showed he was skilled, but undersized. A meeting with another tough flyweight like Dustin Ortiz

Vila has knockout power and elite wrestling, while Ortiz is similarly a good wrestler with developing striking. Vila is getting up in age, so his time to fight in the UFC is now.

Josh Robinson vs. Ulysses Gomez

10 of 10

Ulysses Gomez and Josh Robinson are both top flyweights outside of the UFC, so the company needs to grab them.

Gomez is a good submission wrestler, while Robinson is a lesser-known flyweight. Robinson has the skills it takes to make it in the UFC, but he needs a crowd to prove it to.
