Prelude to the Match of the Century

Ildefonso SabarreFeb 11, 2009

An expectant fighter ready to raise his hand to acclaim the win that would catapult him to the position he most hoped for—a fight for the match of the century with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This would be the fitting description for the coming fight on May 2 between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.

Everybody would asked, why is this so? Well, although at present Manny is the pound for pound best boxer, there can be no denying that Pretty Boy Floyd proclaims himself as the best in this era and many would agree.

But this thinking is greatly challenged by Manny Pacquiao's win over Oscar De La Hoya because Floyd Jr.'s win over Oscar is nowhere near Manny's. To compare the two fights is like north to south or east to west, meaning Manny won convincingly while Floyd Jr. did not because it was a split decision.

Actually Oscar was so convinced that he could win over Floyd Jr. that he asked for an immediate rematch. Actually he already planned for this if not for the untimely retirement of Floyd Jr. But with Manny, he exalted him and calling Manny as his idol which he never does to Floyd Jr.

So the boxing greatness which everybody excitedly wants to bestow is now becoming elusive because it has transcended to a different level. A level that is not only for the best boxer of this era, but for the crown held by the King himself Sugar Ray Robinson.

And it all depends on the events and results of the coming fights and whether or not Floyd Jr. is willing to accept the challenge to cement his legacy by fighting the best and not to be content in sitting on his pale crown.

But then if Floyd Jr. decide not to swim to the rising tide of boxing greatness then he might drown to the tsunami of a career called the Pacman because right now the Pacman is being compared to the summa cum laude of a boxer called Henry Armstrong.

And another title or two for the Pacman will eventually catapult him to being the best of all time and Floyd Jr. will be relegated to the second rate chicken of a boxer.

So watch out for the fight on May 2nd, not because it is the match of the century but the prelude to it, if the money man answers the bell.
