Floyd Mayweather Loses Jessie Vargas to Bob Arum's Top Rank
Jessie Vargas and new boss Bob Arum
Floyd Mayweather's anemic Mayweather Promotions just took another hit by losing it's most prized prospect Jessie Vargas (19-0, 9 KO) to Top Rank Promotions.
Vargas made a career-high payday of a guaranteed $150,000 against journeyman Steve Forbes (35-11, 11 KO) on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard this past Cinco de Mayo (May 5).
Now Vargas is with Bob Arum's Top Rank, who also promotes boxing superstar and former welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO).
Top Rank also promotes current WBO welterweight champ Timothy Bradley (29-0, 12 KO).
Perhaps Vargas, being a welterweight himself, saw a better opportunity with a promoter with a wider stable of fighters.
Junior middleweight Deandre Latimore (23-4, 17 KO) is the only fighter beside Mayweather still left on Mayweather Promotions according to the promoter's official website.
Latimore lost by knockout in Round 6 to Puerto Rican veteran Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO) on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard.
Mayweather has consistently referred to his promotional outfit as "the past, present and future of entertainment," but it's quickly becoming a snapshot in Boxing's past.
