Mexico vs. Guyana: Mexico Must Show Consistency to Succeed in Future Matches

Rob GoldbergJun 9, 2012

Mexico has been playing well in its international friendlies, but the team needs to regain focus now that the games matter.

The first match of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF saw the national team get the result they wanted, a 3-1 win over Guyana. However, the play was sloppy and the difference between the two squads should have been greater.

Mexico is a very talented team, led by Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez. Last week, the two led the way in a 2-0 victory over Brazil. Recently, they have also taken care of Wales and Bosnia-Herzegovina in international friendlies.

Still, El Tri has a lot to work on if it wants to be contenders for the major world competitions.

Against Brazil, the team was only able to maintain possession for 33 percent of the match and took 10 fewer shots than their opponent. This has to do with sitting back on the early lead, but without a few lucky bounces, that game could have been completely different.

Guyana was less competition for Mexico, but the final outcome should not have ever been in question.

Considering they came into the game starting two strikers, they needed to be aggressive for the entire 90 minutes. Settling for three goals against an inferior team will not prepare them for tougher opponents.

In addition, an own goal by Hector Moreno further shows that there is still work to be done.

Jorge Arangure, ESPN's blogger for the Mexican national team, even believes that Guyana should be more satisfied with the final than Mexico.

"

FT Mexico 3, Guyana 1. Surely, nobody leaves Estadio Azteca satisfied, except perhaps for Guyana, who did not get embarrassed as predicted

Mexico is set to have a tougher challenge this coming week with a battle against El Salvador. If this team does not improve their fundamentals and play with consistency, they will be in trouble.
