In one of the most dominant matches of the 2012 French Open, Maria Sharapova punched her ticket to the semifinals by beating Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-3.

Sharapova was all over the clay of Roland Garros and is looking as good right now as she has in her pro career. With Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka beaten early, there is a clear path to a major championship.

If the veteran can keep her eyes on the prize and stay focused, there is little doubt that she should win the 2012 French Open playing like she did Wednesday.

What It Means

There is no disputing that Sharapova has the most momentum of any woman left in the French Open field. Add in her experience and poise under pressure, and there is little doubt that she is the favorite to steal the whole show.

As good as Kanepi looked all tournament, Sharapova proved how dominant she was by steamrolling her. This is arguably as good as the veteran has ever looked.

What’s Next?

For Sharapova, the next step on the ladder to the top is the semifinals. She will find out who she is playing after the winner is decided in the Petra Kvitova-Yaroslava Shvedova match.

No matter who is unfortunate enough to draw Sharapova, there is no way that the streak she is on will be broken by either woman. As well as both are playing, they aren’t playing on Sharapova’s level.

The key will be focusing on the task at hand and not looking ahead, but if she can do that she should walk through to an easy tournament win.
