Los Angeles Dodgers: Dodgers Beat Phillies, Jonathan Papelbon Throws a Tantrum

Joe ChaconJun 5, 2012

The Los Angeles Dodgers came out on top of a very heated matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night with a final score of 4-3.

Both Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and bench coach Trey Hillman were ejected by home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

Clayton Kershaw wasn't quite "Kershaw-esque" from the mound, but he did manage to go seven innings and strike out five Phillies.

Aside from the Dodgers getting off to a good start in Philadelphia, the story of the evening became Jonathan Papelbon's tirade on the aforementioned home plate umpire. Papelbon had this to say about Reyburn:

"

I just wanted to ask him if he could throw me out for what I was thinking. He was terrible all night. He probably needs to go back to Triple-A. If you don't do your job, you get demoted or fired. It affected the outcome of the game."

"

Papelbon will most likely receive a fine from Major League Baseball for his comments on Reyburn. But given the displeasure Mattingly and Hillman also had with Reyburn, it wouldn't surprise me to see this get swept under the rug by the league office.

The Dodgers and Phillies will meet again tonight at Citizens Bank Park. Chad Billingsley (2-4, 4.09) will take the mound for the Dodgers and try to snap his nine-start winless streak. Cliff Lee (0-2, 3.00) looks to earn his first win of the season.
