Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Breaking Down Potential Target Nick Powell

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Nick Powell is an intriguing prospect for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, but you have to wonder why the Gunners are currently bothering with the young 18-year-old.

The young Brit is an up-and-coming star, sure, it just seems that Arsenal should spend this time going after immediate help for Robin van Persie.

Nonetheless, the Gunners are reportedly interested in Powell (via mirror.co.uk):

Powell has attracted the attention of several top-flight clubs including Manchester United who appear to be favourites for the £10 million-rated front man. Chelsea are also keen.

But Powell has also been the subject of rave reports by Arsenal scouts to manager Arsene Wenger.

"

Let's take a further look at this young prospect.

Background

The 18-year-old Powell spent his entire youth career with Crewe Alexandra, which is where he currently plays.

Powell has played with Crewe's pro team since the 2010-11 season.

Additionally, Powell made seven appearances with England's Under-16 team and 17 appearances with their Under-17 team.

Production

Last year for Crewe, Powell hardly did anything during his limited time. But this season, he has absolutely burst onto the scene.

En route to leading Crewe to a promotion from English League Two, Powell scored 15 goals and tallied seven assists in 37 appearances. He put up an amazing 108 shots, with 32 coming on goal.

And when you see goals like this one, you're not surprised at how often he put the ball in the back of the net.

What's more, Powell is good with the ball at his feet. He possesses good creativity and pace, and that resulted in him drawing 92 fouls on the season.

In 17 appearances with England's Under-17 team, Powell scored an impressive five goals.

Why Arsenal is interested

When you watch what Powell can do around the box, it's clear why the Gunners are interested in the 18-year-old kid.

Still, he's only competed in League Two, and it's a large unknown how long it will take him to be able to hold his own in the EPL.

Building for the future is important, but Wenger can't afford to get into a bidding war with Manchester United or Chelsea. Instead, he must first concentrate on increasing current depth and proving to RVP that he is looking to win trophies.

Once he does that, then he can start going after 18-year-olds.
