French Open 2012: Novak Djokovic and Biggest 4th-Round Winners
With the 2012 French Open flying by, it’s time to sit back and examine which stars came out of the fourth round ready to make a run at the finals at Roland Garros.
Stars like Novak Djokovic have proved their mental toughness and have cashed their ticket to the quarterfinals.
All of the following stars had amazing fourth rounds and will continue to roll on the clay courts of the French Open.
Novak Djokovic
While the No. 22 seeded Andreas Seppi was not expected to give tennis star Novak Djokovic a serious battle, the final 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 score shows that this wasn't an easy match.
As tough as this fourth-round matchup was for Djokovic, his ability to take that adversity and still churn out a win is what has made him so great. Another hard-wrought battle under his belt, and the world’s No. 1 is even better now.
Roland Garros and the French Open may be Rafael Nadal’s bread and butter, but the Djoker is too hot to be stopped. He will cruise through and make his way to the Finals.
Dominika Cibulkova
While not many tennis fans knew Dominika Cibulkova before her amazing fourth-round upset over world’s No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), we will never forget how she dominated the tennis star.
There is no question that Azarenka is still very young and has growing to do, but her talent is outstanding. The questions around the star were further exposed by Cibulkova's elite play.
As much as Azarenka still has to figure out how to handle the pressure of being a top performer, she will have to give the spotlight to the very deserving Cibulkova. If she goes on to win the tournament, this will be the match that made her a star.
While Federer’s competition against Belgian David Goffin wasn’t the most intense of his career, the two did battle hard for more sets than most thought they’d go.
As good as Goffin looked, it was Federer that got stronger as the sets went on and started to utterly dominate the young player towards the end 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4—another great match for the veteran champion.
Federer will need all the momentum he can get as he is in the same end of the bracket as the Djoker. If Federer wants to make it to the finals, he has to go through the world’s No. 1.
