Euro 2012: Belgian Fans Auction Loyalty, Will Support Team of Winning Bidder

Michael CummingsJun 1, 2018

It's (almost) good to be a Belgian football fan right now.

Belgian wunderkind Eden Hazard is the hottest name in Europe's transfer market, and the national team is full of established stars like Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen and Marouane Fellaini.

And yet, Belgium failed to qualify for Euro 2012. Thus, while Europe's best are competing in Poland and the Ukraine this summer, Belgian fans will be doing…something.

Don't pity them, though. Some enterprising Belgian fans have come up with a great solution to this whole mess:

They're selling their fan loyalty on eBay, with all proceeds going to Unicef.

Here's the link to the ad, which appears on the Belgian version of the auction site. (h/t Who Ate All The Pies).

If you don't believe it, click here for the group's Facebook page. Looks completely legit to me.

Here's what the fans wrote about themselves on the eBay ad:

"

For sale: Belgian soccer fans for euro 2012. Second hand but mint condition. Not been used since Fifa World Cup 2002.

Once again we Belgians have no team to root for at the euro 2012 soccer championship. Since tournaments are much more fun when you have a favourite team, we decided to put our fandom for sale at ebay.

All profits will be sent directly to Unicef.

Once the team is eliminated, we will grieve for 24 hours and then put ourselves for sale again on ebay. Hopefully joined by the previous winner since he or she will also have become an orphaned soccer fan by then.

"

To sweeten the deal, the fans promise to "kick a pigeon or smoke in a non-smoking area" if the winning bidder commands them to do so (if only I could sell my services in such a way).

At press time, six bids had been lodged. So far, the winning bid is €16.75.

Strangely enough, however, the Belgian eBay crowd might not represent the day's strangest bit of Euro 2012 news.

As part of their barnstorming, fun-loving Euro 2012 summer romp, the English national team will visit Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp during World War II.

So, you could always be doing that with your summer vacation.
